This is the show’s chance to go back to the roots of the day.
It’s probably safe to say that virtually no one is watching days of our lives was surprised to learn that Jada was pregnant with Eric’s baby. While it was nice to add some extra twists to the Eric/Nicole drama, as we all know, it’s one of the oldest soap tricks in the book.
However, Jada’s reaction to the news was neither devastation at the terrible timing nor exhilaration when she suddenly saw a way to hold on to Eric. Instead, she was understandably angry, hurt, and frustrated.
When Eric tried to be there for her, Jada told him to leave her alone because she wasn’t sure what she wanted to do yet. And can we blame her? She just found out that she is pregnant with the child of a man who is about to leave her.
Even if Eric helps, unless he suddenly decides to marry Jada (which would be a terrible idea and only lead to more heartache, as Nicole and Rafe both know), they would likely share custody. It would bind Jada forever to a man she might just want to forget. She also had to put up with being a single working mother and a police officer at that. You might think that being a cop in a small town is no big deal, but in Salem, danger lurks at just about every corner.
So what if this story we all saw coming a mile away wasn’t the same tired soap opera we were expecting, but a much more nuanced, complicated, and heartbreaking one? Once upon a time, soap operas addressed social issues with stories that got viewers talking about things that not everyone was comfortable talking about.
With the fall of Roe v. Wade and every state’s decision on abortion, this would be the perfect time to do it days of our lives to tell a story about the difficult subject. days of our liveswould of course have to be careful and sensitive about it, but could they have two better characters to embody their sides?
We could see Jada hurt and feeling alone and unprepared to raise a child while still establishing herself and her career in a new city. Eric, on the other hand, we all know as a man of strong religious beliefs who is no longer a priest simply because his vocation kicked him out for trying to save his mother’s soul.
It would make sense for him to want Jada to keep the baby while she desires an abortion. And that would allow the soap to compassionately embody the high emotions of the subject. It wouldn’t be two sides yelling at each other. It would be two people who care about each other and want very different things for perhaps very different reasons.
And then there is Nicole. If she and Eric decided they would still be together, whose side would she be on? Would she support the man she just blew up her marriage for, or insist it’s Jada’s choice? No matter what, it’s hard to ignore the fact that this story would be incredibly compelling on TV, too.
