It’s not the first time actress Anna Kendrick has found herself in the air while receiving wise direction from Canadian talent. In 2009, it was under the guidance of Canadian director Jason Reitman in her breakthrough role as Natalie Keener in In heaven to George Clooney.

This time it was the Toronto Fire Service to the rescue.

The star and six of her colleagues appear to be in town promoting their new film Alice darling at the Toronto International Film Festival got stuck in the elevator at 225 Richmond Street West on the way to an event on Saturday.

“So next time I should take the stairs,” Kendrick joked on Twitter. “That’s all I ate last night, I knew it.”

There was great ad libbing and plenty of comedy in that motionless elevator. In a colorful party dress, Kendrick joked and turned lemons into lemonade.

Don’t feel like a second take. This one was done perfectly the first time.

It was like a Saturday night live Sketch, but real.

“That’s why I shouldn’t leave the house without at least one small airplane-sized bottle, because you never know when you might get stuck in an elevator. … Guys we need to ration the limited food supplies we have,” Kendrick teased in her Instagram video. “Just swinging in the elevator…we love it.”

Kendrick, herself a budding director, used her phone to film some great footage of the drama that followed, including first contact with Toronto firefighters opening a hatch at the top of the elevator while delivering the news that they were stuck between floors.

Then a ladder comes down.

“I can’t believe this is happening. Are you kidding me?” Kendrick was heard saying.

An ever-calming Toronto firefighter made sure everyone stayed calm and watched their heads.

“Come on, we got you!”

We apologize, but this video could not be loaded.

Then, one by one, they climbed up and out of the elevator to safety.

“It’s a good thing I’m not wearing a short skirt today,” Kendrick mused. “The Lord said to me, choose the long skirt.”

Kendrick, who shot this film in Kawartha Lakes, managed to make it to all of her weekend events, including her red carpet gala at Roy Thomson Hall. But not before we meet the heroes of Ward 331 on Claremont St.

“I’m in love with every single one of you,” Kendrick said.

It was a pat on the back that Toronto Fire Chief Matthew Pegg appreciated.

“Another reason I’m proud of @Toronto_Fire members,” he tweeted. “Elevator rescue is one of the specialty disciplines we rely on to protect the dense, vertical, awe-inspiring city of Toronto.”

And Toronto Mayor John Tory thanked firefighters for the work they do alongside fighting fires in the city.

“It’s difficult for people to understand all the things that our firefighters are doing to protect us,” Tory said. “That includes a lot of medical emergencies and elevator calls like this one.

“While being trapped in an elevator can be a frightening experience, the photos of Anna Kendrick and the firefighters illustrate what seems like a happy ending to a story and, more importantly, Ms. Kendrick carries the positive reputation of our city and our firefighters worldwide accepted .

“All of this is thanks to the professionalism of our firefighters and the patience and good humor of Ms. Kendrick and the other elevator passengers.”

Toronto Firefighters Brian White, Mike Dinsmore, Shane Elliot, Scott Fitzpatrick, Megan Campbell, and Scott Tyrrell, who work at Toronto Fire Service Stations 332 and 331, were great co-stars in this video, and Canada continues to play a big one Roll this star’s elevator ride to the top!
