Cinematography and storytelling are very important to legendary director Martin Scorsese. But despite his love of cinema, Scorsese had trouble seeing movies with audiences in theaters. This is partly due to how modern audiences interact with movies.
Martin Scorsese thought cinema was being devalued thanks to streaming services
Scorsese is both a fan of the cinema and a contributor. But over the years he’s noticed certain changes in the film industry that he didn’t like. One of those changes has affected the way streaming services have impacted Hollywood
In an essay that Scorsese wrote and was published by Harper’s, the director highlighted what he believes has been done to the film industry. As an example, he drew attention to how the importance of content in the film industry may have changed in recent years.
“Just 15 years ago, the term ‘content’ only came up when cinema was being seriously discussed, and was contrasted and measured with ‘form’. Then, little by little, it was used more and more by the people who were taking over media companies, most of whom knew nothing about the history of the art form or even cared enough to think they should,” Scorsese wrote.
This caused cinema to be devalued in Scorsese’s eyes.
“Cinema has always been, and always will be, much more than content, and the years that these films have come out from all over the world, speaking to each other and redefining the art form on a weekly basis, are proof that ” he added.
