Mario Movie Trailer Breakdown: 17 Easter Eggs and Theories from the Super Mario Bros. Trailer - IGN

After years of rumor and speculation, the first trailer from Nintendo and Illumination Entertainment for The Super Mario Bros. movie is here, and it’s packed with fantastic moments and a few Easter eggs for Super Mario fans to appreciate.

Here’s every little detail and mystery we found in the Super Mario Bros. movie trailer!

The very first shot of the trailer gives us a glimpse into a mysterious ice kingdom that the famous Mario Bros. penguins call home. While we’re not exactly sure how the penguins inhabited this location, ice kingdoms are fairly commonplace in the Mario universe, as are penguins, who made their Super Mario debut in Super Mario 64’s Cool Cool Mountain level.

At about the 25 second mark we see what initially appears to be Bowser’s airship. It shares many of the same structural similarities – like the retractable tracks – but this appears to be an entire Bowser level for Bowser to fly around and travel in. He seems to be rolling with his entire army, and he obviously needs a large flying island to fit them all.

We hear Kevin Michael Richardson as Kamek after about 29 seconds. Kamek usually shows up to add his evil magic touch to a level and make things harder for Mario, but here it seems like he’s sort of Bowser’s right-hand man in the opening act. when you look reallyyyyyy Up close, you can see that Kamek’s teleportation particle effects are the typical squares, circles, and triangles he uses when casting spells in-game. Kevin Michael Richardson has been lending his voice to animation projects for decades, but one of his most notable roles for gamers was when he voiced Goro in the first live-action film, Mortal Kombat.

While the image of Bowser in 36 seconds is an excellent shot, even if it isn’t, does it remind anyone of the cover of Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury? Regardless, it looks great.

Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury - sounds familiar?

In the long shot of the Koopa army, you can see a row of cannons right in the middle. If you’ve ever played a Mario game, especially World Eight from Super Mario Bros. 3, you know Koopas love their guns.

The wait is over and after 47 seconds we finally hear Jack Black’s Bowser and what a voice that is. Almost every character in this trailer has a bit of voice modification, but Jack Black seems to be nailing Bowser here. Can we also say that most of the characters here have been changed a bit for the film, but it especially seems like they tried to make Bowser look like Jack Black.

A few seconds later we see that the penguins were trying their best, but unfortunately we see Bowser and Kamek making incredibly short work of them. At least we didn’t have to watch Mario drop one off a cliff… yet.

At 1:30 it’s a power star! Stars can have different meanings in the Mario universe. Sometimes they grant temporary invincibility, sometimes they’re the main object that Mario hunts down in games like Mario 64 and Mario Galaxy, and sometimes they’re what determines who the winner is in a game of Mario Party, but whatever, they always are highly sought after, and it seems obvious that collecting them is Bowser’s main goal. One would have to assume that there’s more to the movie than just this one, and that there’s probably one hidden somewhere in the Mushroom Kingdom, which will set Mario and Bowser on a collision course.

When Mario first lands in the Mushroom Kingdom at 1:41, he’s lying on his back and for a brief moment you can see a yellow butterfly fly away, a shot that looks eerily similar to an ending shot in Super Mario Galaxy. Then when we cut to the wide angle of Mario standing up, you see butterflies swirl around. Just like in Super Mario 64, when Mario is silent, he seems to attract butterflies.

We finally hear Chris Pratt voicing Mario as well, but guess what? He basically just sounds like Chris Pratt.

As you scour the Mushroom Kingdom for secrets, the first thing you’ll notice are easily recognizable Cheep Cheeps swimming in the river. You need a microscope to see them, but they’re definitely there.

This is clearly an origin story as Mario is confused as to where he is. You see him falling out of the pipe, so theoretically this movie could take the (loosely) canon approach that Mario lives in New York (or maybe… New Donk?) and got sucked down a drain he was trying to unclog , and teleported to the Mushroom Kingdom. An important difference to Mario’s clothing is that he wears a shirt with a collar. Why would he wear a collared shirt and jumpsuit over it? We can only guess.

At 2:08 we get an incredible wide angle shot of the Mushroom Kingdom. You can see that the hills here actually look like realistic versions of the tall, rounded hills from the background of some levels in the games. While it might be a bit obvious, we’ll point it out anyway: Peach’s Castle can be seen in the far distance. And it’s very pretty. There’s also a rainbow floating above it, and if you’ve played Super Mario 64 you know rainbows love hanging around Peach’s castle.

We also suspect that one of the next scenes right after we see Mario hopping on mushrooms will be his arrival in the Mushroom Kingdom. In a brief shot, we see Mario running towards the castle with Toad in tow. Well, we’re assuming he can, as the poster revealed earlier this week shows Mario standing upright (sort of) in front of a marketplace, with Toad at his side leading him inside.

As the Mario trailer comes to a close, we see Charlie Day as Luigi being chased by Dry Bones. Luigi is noticeably separated from Mario, as he usually is. We’d have to assume that Mario and Luigi both came to the Mushroom Kingdom at the same time, but something separated the two, and Luigi seems to have gotten the unhappy ending of the deal.

And that’s every little detail we’ve captured so far in the trailer for The Super Mario Bros. movie. Did you notice something that we missed? Sound off in the comments and let us know. As we await the movie’s release on April 7, 2023, we’ll be sharing many more news and reveals about the Mario movie. Wahoo!
