When it comes to gaming, there has always been a wide range of experiences for players to enjoy and for PLAION and Japanese developer Toylogictheir latest offer from war countriesa free-to-play third-person online multiplayer war game set in a medieval fantasy world could find a good place among the modern gaming crowd.

Positioned as a mashup of battle royale, MOBAs and hack-and-slash action genres, war countries isn’t entirely new, but brings some fresh ideas into the mix. Our hands-on time with the developers has been a fun time that has shown great promise as the march towards open beta on Steam draws near.

Amid the talk of different classes of warriors, clerics, and mages, as well as a valor system for progression, our preview threw us into a two-army battle mode for up to 40 players. Armies are further divided into squads, and each is tasked with specific objectives that can be determined by the chosen commander in each battle.

Each class brings with it a variety of gear and skill options, some of which make you a better fighter, while others focus on defense and base building to fend off attackers. The key in war countries consists of destroying the core of the enemy that is in his stronghold, progressing in the form of capturing towers, eliminating other players and building siege weapons.

Teamwork will of course be key here, as intense combat against other players will require more tact and skill than just pressing buttons. Mastering the timing of lunges and healing spells will ensure you’ll fare better than someone charging into the fray, and even against a larger number than you there’s always a chance with the right skills.

For those who like the strategic side of things, volunteer to lead your squad or command the entire army. The latter can dictate objectives using the in-game map and have a view of the tides of battle, where clever calls and focused attacks can lead to victory war countries.

Of course, it wouldn’t be as fun if standard soldiers always went into battle. Every positive action you take in a game earns you Valor Points, which can then be used to summon higher-level, titled characters. Nothing comes close to the satisfaction of turning the tide as the Juggernauts fight back against opposing foes in the late game, with the trade-off being an extended cooldown if you die. And did we mention robots? Cataclysm events can also provide much-needed help, as in our time a giant robot enters the field and wreaks havoc.

Whether in victory or in defeat war countries, you will level up the characters who participated in the game, paving the way for better titles that allow for a greater variety of power and customization options. Foresight to create decks of different archetypes and tier levels is key, so you always have options to choose from during a game. It should also make players happy to know that competitive progression is limited to in-game progression and monetization is for cosmetics only.

Obviously there is still work to be done war countries, with performance issues rearing its ugly head during our preview, but that’s understandable. Between that and the various tweaks the team will be making to the game’s overall systems, mechanics and balancing, it should be possible war countries navigating the competition, especially with its focus on strategy and tactics, and being accessible to all.

Be sure to check out the open beta war countries September 12th via Steam, with the game transitioning to the current generation of consoles at a later date.
