Prince Harry and Meghan Markle subtly honored Queen Elizabeth II, who died Thursday at the age of 96.
Harry, 37, and Markle, 41, updated their Archewell Foundation website to show a black screen with a simple message in white letters.
“In loving memory of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II,” the page read, adding the dates of her life, “1926-2022.”
The British monarchy also changed its website, which normally shares updates about the royal family, to a black interface while “appropriate changes are made”.
“Queen Elizabeth II 1926 – 2022,” read the page, adding a photo of Queen Elizabeth II’s coronation in 1953.
The website also shared the statement the royal family released announcing her death.
“The Queen died peacefully in Balmoral this afternoon,” it said. “The King and The Queen Consort will remain in Balmoral tonight and return to London tomorrow.”
King Charles III – who automatically became King of the United Kingdom and Commonwealth on the death of his mother – also issued a statement expressing “the greatest sadness”.
“We deeply mourn the passing of a cherished sovereign and a beloved mother. I know their loss will be felt deeply across the country, in the rich and in the Commonwealth, and by countless people around the world,” the statement said, in part.
Shortly before her death, the late Queen’s relatives rushed to her side after doctors were “concerned” for her health and placed her “under medical supervision” at Balmoral Castle.
Charles and his wife, now Queen Consort Camilla Parker Bowles, and Prince William made their way to the royal estate late Thursday morning.
Harry appeared sad when he arrived separately from the others and hours after the Queen’s death. He made his way to the castle alone as Markle couldn’t accompany him as she was promoting the Invictus Games in Germany.
However, it is expected that both the former Duke and Duchess of Sussex will fly to the UK for a funeral, along with the rest of the royal family and leaders from around the world.
Harry and Markle famously stepped down from royal duties in early 2020 before relocating to California.
The Queen’s grandson has returned to his homeland on occasion – including to attend the funeral of his grandfather Prince Philip, the unveiling of his mother Princess Diana’s statue and the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, which Meghan also attended in June.
