A massive amount of leaked GTA 6 footage has surfaced online, confirming numerous details about the much-anticipated crime fest.
Covering a massive array of work-in-progress gameplay, the leaked footage gives us our first glimpse of GTA 6 in action – albeit in a completely unpolished state. Gunplay and other gameplay features are shown while character and setting details are hinted at in the environment.
Everything is very unfinished. The footage, overlaid with debugging information and technical metrics, is clearly from a running build of the game. But it’s real. Rockstar confirmed the leaked footage is authentic and requested that many of the videos and screenshots shared via social media be removed.
That lets us put together exactly what has been confirmed.
Vice City is back
Footage confirms a leak from earlier this year and suggests that GTA 6 will take place in Vice City – Grand Theft Auto’s fictional version of Miami. The clips show numerous city signs and buildings with the words “Vice City” and “VCPD” written on the side of police cars (probably an initialism for Vice City Police Department).
But GTA 6 seems to be set in a modern version of the city. While 2002’s Grand Theft Auto: Vice City is set in the mid-80s, the presence of smartphones and modern-looking cars suggests that GTA 6 will bring the metropolis into the present. Although it’s not just the city that you will be exploring. Some rural areas are also shown, as well as what appears to be a swamp. Some well-known locations will also return, including the Malibu Club and the Ocean View Hotel.
Combination of two characters
Footage suggests that GTA 6 will feature two protagonists as well as the series’ first female protagonist. That aligns with a previous leak that pointed out the game’s dual cues and suggested that Rockstar approached the characters with more political sensibility than in other games.
The footage shows a Latina woman named Lucia and her accomplice Jason, according to the debug info. They’ve been previously described as a Bonnie and Clyde-type couple, and this footage certainly echoes that. In a leaked video, the criminal duo are seen robbing a diner, mugging the cashier and fleeing when police arrive. One of the debug menus even mentions Bonnie and Clyde by name.
argument
Gunplay is similar to GTA 5, with a few new toys and features. The player carries various weapons – including an assault rifle, sniper, shotgun, pistol, and rocket launcher – as well as makeshift weapons – such as a golf club, baseball bat, and crowbar. At some point, they’ll flip their active weapon to the other hand and pick up a rifle from the ground to add to their inventory – both new features.
It looks like you’ve got some new moves to play with too. A leaked video showed the player leaning his entire torso out of a car window while aiming an assault rifle in a full 360-degree circle. Elsewhere, the player goes prone, crouching for cover, and carrying an NPC over their shoulder. That could allow for more insidious, more stealth-focused firefights.
A new radial weapon selection screen can also be discovered. It appears to show a health kit or some kind of medicine, suggesting that players can heal or buff themselves mid-fight.
A whole lot of Easter eggs
Even this leaked footage shows some callbacks and easter eggs that fans from the wider GTA universe will recognize. Expect many of the games’ in-world stores to return, with LTD Gasoline already making an appearance. LifeInvader — GTA’s tongue-in-cheek social media platform and thinly-veiled parody of Facebook — also makes an appearance.
Five stars or fail
As expected, GTA 6 will feature the main Wanted levels of the series. The footage shows a five-star system like that of GTA 5 and confirms that GTA 6 will not return to the six-star system that previous entries in the series had.
But the police got an upgrade. If the cops see you getting into a stolen vehicle, they’ll be looking for you even after you’ve made your first escape. It’s lifelike – cars have license plates, after all – and suggests you need to think more about evading the law.
character customization
While the leaks didn’t fully show off GTA 6’s character customization features, we did at least get confirmation of their existence. Lucia, the game’s main female character, is shown in various outfits and hairstyles, confirming that her threads and hair can be customized. It will be interesting to see the depth of GTA 6’s character customization options after Saints Row leaned heavily into the feature earlier this year with its granular boss factory.
