Vice TV is expanding its lineup of pro wrestling docuseries with a new show from the Dark Side of the Ring team and Dwayne Johnson and Dany Garcia’s Seven Bucks Productions.
Titled Tales from the Territories, the series will delve into the days of wrestling when the industry was divided into smaller, territory-based organizations. The new series will debut on October 4th at 10pm ET. Check out a new trailer for the show below.
“The wrestling business is filled with nuanced relationships, and there’s a phenomenal story that we know fans will enjoy,” said Brian Gewirtz, senior vice president of creative development at Seven Bucks Productions and former head writer at WWE. “In a lot of ways the wrestling world is a family, they have great moments, tough times and everything in between. There is a rich history of untold stories that we can’t wait to bring to life.”
According to the show’s official description, the Territorial days were the time before wrestling expanded nationwide, when various areas in the United States and Canada, aka “territories,” were areas dominated by unscrupulous bookers and rabid fans who fervently watched her favorite characters, believed and fearless wrestlers who blurred the lines between fiction and reality both in and out of the ring.
Legendary characters from the Territories will appear in the series, which will also feature re-enactments similar to Dark Side of the Ring.
“Tales from the Territories is a project that brings behind the curtain the fascinating, complex story of an industry we greatly admire,” said Hiram Garcia, President of Production, Seven Bucks Productions. “Wrestling is embedded in Dwayne’s DNA and part of the brand ethos of our Seven Bucks Productions, so we’re honored to bring these sensational stories and create a time capsule of this legendary industry. To be able to honor and highlight the larger than life figures who started the wrestling industry through their first-hand accounts is very special and the kind of storytelling we love here at Seven Bucks.”
Johnson, Dany Garcia, Hiram Garcia and Gewirtz will executive produce for Seven Bucks Productions along with Evan Husney and Jason Eisener, co-executive producers and co-creators of Dark Side of the Ring. Vanessa Case and Guillermo Garcia are Executive Producers from Vice Studios Canada along with Catherine Whyte and Lee Hoffman for Vice TV. Chavo Guerrero Jr. will serve as co-executive producer. The series is distributed worldwide by Vice Distribution.
“We are incredibly excited to expand the ‘Dark Side of the Ring’ series with this first-ever exploration of the hidden past of the Old West wrestling era, with a soulmate in Dwayne Johnson, who has such deep family roots in the history of the business,” said Husney and Eisener. “We can’t wait to share the compelling stories of the pioneers who set the stage for wrestling pop culture to dominate the world.”
Dark Side of the Ring, which aired in its third season in 2021, proved incredibly popular with Vice. The show remains Vice TV’s most watched series of all time. It has since spawned the Dark Side of Football and Dark Side of the 90s spin-offs.
“We are incredibly honored that Dwayne Johnson felt Vice TV was the right place for him to chronicle the deeply personal stories of his wrestling family and community, the spectacular craft that introduced us to the Hollywood megastar, the… we all know and love today,” said Morgan Hertzan, executive vice president and general manager of Vice TV.
