Don’t get Rob Schneider to work with Bill Murray.
The comedian and Saturday night live Alum had a lot to say about them ghostbusters Star during a Wednesday appearance on SiriusXM’s Jim Norton & Sam Roberts. When one of the hosts noticed that Jaw Actor Robert Shaw, who played Quint, was said to have been difficult on the set of the blockbuster, Schneider brought up Murray.
“It’s the same with Bill Murray,” Schneider said. “I’m not going to say who the filmmaker was, but ‘Bill Murray will come, he’ll change the… dialogue. He’s going to change things and it’s going to be great, but you don’t know who you’re going to get. Which Bill Murray will you get. Nice Bill Murray? Or will you get tough Bill Murray?'”
He noted that while Murray was one SNL Actor himself predates Schneider by more than a decade, has a reputation for being delightful in his interactions with the public — showing up at engagement photo sessions and serving beers — his personal experience has been different.
“He’s super nice to the fans. He wasn’t very nice to us,” said Schneider. “He always hated us Saturday night live when he was the host. Absolutely hated us. I mean simmers.”
After leaving the sketch show, Murray came back to host the episode, which aired February 20, 1993, a week after his now-classic film Groundhog Day debuted at the box office. That was the iteration of the cast that featured future movie stars Chris Farley and Adam Sandler. Schneider said Murray was not impressed.
“He hated Chris Farley passionately,” Schneider said. “Like he was just about to cook just looking at him. I do not know exactly [why]but I want to think it’s because Chris thought it was cool [John] Belushi – who [was] his friend he saw die – that he thought it was cool to be so out of control. That’s my interpretation, but I don’t know exactly. I do not believe it. I only believe it 50 percent.”
Farley notoriously died of a drug overdose in 1997, just two years after leaving the NBC late-night piles. But throughout his life he was open about his adoration for the late Belushi, who himself died of an overdose in 1982 after being on SNL with Murray. Both were 33.
Schneider insisted Farley wasn’t the only one who didn’t get Murray’s approval.
“He just really hated us all. The least bit of hate was directed at me…I was very happy that he hated me less,” he said, laughing. “Because he’s my hero.”
Then Schneider was asked how he could tell that Murray didn’t like her.
“You only saw the way he looked at her [Farley]and it was just anger, you know?” he said. “I mean he hated [Adam] sandler Really hated Sandler too. murray He just wasn’t into that groove, you know? And Sandler just went for it, and just like… as soon as he got on you could tell the audience just ate him up, you know?”
An attorney for Murray, who traditionally has not employed a publicist and is known for being difficult to reach, did not respond to Yahoo Entertainment’s request for comment.
Just this week, a new report from Puck revealed that Murray had paid a $100,000 settlement for his alleged inappropriate behavior on the set of the Aziz Ansari-directed film to be mortal. Production was halted in April after an unidentified member of production filed a complaint about the incident. Multiple sources told the publication that Murray straddled a female production staff member on a bed on set. He also kissed her on the mouth, despite both wearing masks. He said he meant it as a joke.
Actress Geena Davis, who co-starred with Murray in the 1990s Fast changewrote in her memoirs, death of politeness, which was published on Tuesday, that she also had bad experiences with him. She said Murray insisted on giving her a massager the first time they met and later yelled at her in front of everyone.
