Young SheldonThe sixth season premiere delivered an unexpected callback to a classic big bang theory Scene.
When the Coopers arrived for Sunday service, judgmental looks from those around them, still upset that 17-year-old Georgie was getting 29-year-old Mandy pregnant, drove Mary to sit back as much as possible – much to Sheldon’s chagrin. When Missy asked her brother what was going on, he replied, “We’re a long way from the acoustic sweet spot.”
Big Bang Fans first learned about the acoustic sweet spot in Season 2 Episode 9, “The White Asparagus Triangulation,” when Sheldon hijacked Leonard’s date Stephanie and then made it his mission to find the acoustic sweet spot before their movie began .
Of course, this was only a small part of it Young Sheldon‘s eventful premiere, with George and Dale posting bail for Georgie and Meemaw, Sheldon and Missy meeting Mandy for the first time, and Mary’s crisis of faith, exacerbated by disapproval from her parishioners.
Below, Executive Producer Steve Holland weighs in on the elusive Big Bang Recall and the ongoing family drama in Season 6 of the prequel series (which has already been renewed for Season 7).
TVLINE | I wasn’t expecting a call back to the acoustic sweet spot! It’s not exactly an origin story, but…
[Laughs] His love of finding the acoustic sweet spot dates back to his childhood!
TVLINE | Sheldon could care less about the church. But he is offended when the community turns its back on his family. Talk to me a little about the meaning of his outburst.
He doesn’t care about religion, but he cares a lot about his mother and the way she is treated. Sheldon is in his own world a lot [of the time] and says whatever he thinks, whether it comes across as rude or not. We’re always looking for those moments where you can see that he’s also really loyal and really caring. I think it goes a long way when you see that deep down there is a lot of love – especially between him and his mother.
TVLINE | Mary will be spending some time outside of the church this season. What will that look like?
It is the through line, so to speak [of Season 6]. We know from Big Bang that Maria is finding her way back into the Church and becoming more religious than ever, but it gives us an opportunity to tell different stories and show some other sides of Maria’s character. It’s not just a religious scolding. She has a lot more to offer and we’re having a really good time exploring that.
TVLINE | George Sr.’s fate always lends a melancholic note to the scenes between him and his children – like when Jr. Sr. asks about his own experiences as a young father. Will Georgie’s current predicament bring father and son closer together?
This certainly changes their relationship a bit. We play a lot of it [father-son dynamic] for comedy; There’s a lot of George rolling his eyes and thinking Georgie is an idiot. To know about Big Bang that George dies when [his kids] When we’re young, we’re always looking for those moments when it hurts when we know he’s going to do it [die].
TVLINE | I can’t imagine Georgie’s arrest being a good match for Mandy. What can upset you about their non-relationship?
Well, Mandy doesn’t know about the backroom arcade, and Georgie is worried that she will find out. Georgie and Meemaw are going to be a little reticent about what’s going on, and that only raises Mandy’s suspicions.
TVLINE | George and Mary’s extramarital flirtations with Brenda Sparks and Pastor Rob were put on hold this week. How prevalent are these relationships this year?
Not super common. It’s a smoldering background thing. This [relationships do still] raise their heads here and there, but there’s a little pivot in George and Mary’s relationship this season.
TVLINE | Let’s end on a lighter note. After church, Sheldon switched to his second graphic tee in as many episodes. So far we have only seen him dressed at home. Are we to assume that this is the young genius’ personal form of casual wear?
Yes, exactly. It’s not what he wears to school; this is more business attire. But if he’s lounging around at home, hanging out, or at the comic book store, we’ll start filtering these into his closet.
