ST. LOUIS (AP) — Nolan Arenado and Paul DeJong both homed and drove in four carries to help the St. Louis Cardinals beat the New York Yankees 12-9 on Sunday and wrap up a three-game sweep.

St. Louis won its seventh straight season high in a slugfest that lasted 4 hours and 25 minutes — the longest nine-inning game in the majors this season.

DJ LeMahieu homered and Aaron Judge had four RBIs for the AL-leading Yankees, who have lost five in a row. It’s their worst slip since a seven-game slide last September.

St. Louis (60-48) has had its best 12 games of the season over .500 with its first win of the regular season against the Yankees. The rising Cardinals have a two-game lead over second-place Milwaukee in the NL Central.

St. Louis became the first team to defeat the Yankees in a streak of at least three games that year. Atlanta and the New York Mets are the only clubs in the majors to have avoided that fate so far.

Frankie Montas struggled in his Yankees debut. New York manager Aaron Boone and pitching coach Matt Blake were fired.

St. Louis went 6-0 in its first homestand sweep of six or more games since September 2013.

Chris Stratton (6-4) won with ease and Ryan Helsley made his 11th save. Albert Abreu (2-1) took the defeat.

METS 5, BRAVES 2

NEW YORK (AP) — Jacob deGrom hit 12 and led a perfect game in the sixth inning of his second start all season, leading New York past Atlanta and earning his 12th win in 14 games.

Pete Alonso drove in two runs and the first-place Mets equaled a franchise record with 19 strikeouts — including three straight by Edwin Díaz to make his 26th save. They took Atlanta four of five in their NL East showdown and extended their division lead to 6 1/2 games over the defending World Series champions.

A dominant deGrom (1-0), home for the first time in 13 months, retired his first 17 batters — 12 on strikeouts — before defeating No. 9 batter Ehire Adrianza with two outs in sixth place .

Dansby Swanson followed that up with a two-run homer on deGrom’s 76th and final pitch to make it 5-2. The two-time Cy Young Award winner returned on Tuesday for his first major league start since after a series of injuries returned to Washington on July 7, 2021.

DeGrom made his 200th major league start and finished the season with the most strikeouts by a Mets pitcher.

New York scored four times against rookie Spencer Strider (6-4) in the third on two doubles by Alonso and Mark Canha.

BLUE JAYS 3, TWINS 2, 10 ININGS

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Cavan Biggio hit a victim fly in the 10th inning and Whit Merrifield hit on a reverse call to lead Toronto past Minnesota to split their four-game streak.

Merrifield was originally called out on the record to score the go-ahead run, but the call was rescinded after Gary Sanchez, the twins’ catcher, was said to have interfered with Merrifield. Replay officials ruled that Sanchez had not given Merrifield a clear lead to the plate, whose right foot collided with Sanchez’s left leg as he slid home. The out would have ended the inning.

After missing a save in the ninth, Jordan Romano (4-3) closed out the Twins with a 1-2-3 inning in the tenth.

Caleb Thielbar (2-1) gave up Biggio’s sack fly.

PHILLIES 13, NATIONAL 1ST

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Darick Hall hit a homer twice, Nick Maton and Rhys Hoskins each hit a two-run shot and Philadelphia ended a four-game sweep by Washington.

Aaron Nola (8-8) allowed a run in six innings to take the Phillies over .500 in 12 games for the first time since August 2018.

Hall had two solo home runs against starter Cory Abbott (0-1). The Phillies hit 14 home runs in four games, the most of any series in franchise history. Hoskins went deep in all four games.

RAYS 7, TIGERS 0

DETROIT (AP) — Yu Chang and Yandy Diaz pulled base-loaded walks in a seven-run ninth inning to lead Tampa Bay over Detroit.

As the game was scoreless, Isaac Parades hit a one-out single against Gregory Soto (2-6) and finished third with a two-out double from Francisco Mejia. Soto led Jose Siri to load bases and then missed a 3-2 pitch on Chang. Soto also led Diaz to make it 2-0.

Jason Foley replaced Soto, allowing Brandon Lowe a two-run single, Randy Arozarena a two-run double, and Roman Quinn an RBI single.

According to STATS, the Rays became the first team since 1900 to break a goalless tie in the ninth inning or later with seven or more runs, all with two outs.

Colin Poche (4-1) took the win.

PIRATES 8, ORIOLES 1

BALTIMORE (AP) — Bryse Wilson pitched effectively in the sixth inning, Ke’Bryan Hayes hit a homered and Pittsburgh snapped Baltimore’s five-game winning streak.

The Pirates also finished their own nine-game sled at Camden Yards, improving to 2-11 at the ballpark. Wilson (2-6) allowed a run and four hits in more than five innings, and Pittsburgh called the game open in the seventh after a replay changed a call on the plate.

Orioles manager Brandon Hyde was ruled out after that review.

Baltimore starter Spenser Watkins (4-2) retired his first 13 hitters before allowing four straight singles in the fifth.

MARLINS 3, BOY 0

CHICAGO (AP) — Jesús Luzardo allowed a hit through seven innings for his first win since April, and Jacob Stallings and Peyton Burdick hit back-to-back home runs as Miami faded out Chicago to prevent a three-game sweep.

Yan Gomes scored with two outs in the fifth ahead of Luzardo (3-4). Nick Madrigal’s leadoff single in the ninth game against Tanner Scott was Chicago’s only other hit. Scott then got a groundout and two strikeouts for his 15th save.

Stallings hit a two-run shot against Adrian Sampson (0-3) in the fifth before Burdick tied for his first major league home run. On Saturday he had his first career hit.

Luzardo hit six in Miami’s second win in nine games. Chicago had ended its five-game winning streak at home.

DIAMONDBACKS 6, ROCKIES 4

PHOENIX (AP) — Daulton Varsho jogged home on a beam with the go-ahead run, Christian Walker hit a two-run homer and Arizona rallied to beat Colorado.

The Diamondbacks were 4-2 down in the sixth inning, but Emmanuel Rivera — who was added to the close in a deal with Kansas City — hit a solo shot that reduced the deficit to one. It was his seventh homer of the year and the first with his new team.

Arizona loaded bases in eighth ahead of Rockies release Alex Colomé (2-6), who then backed away and failed to get a set position before delivering his pitch. This allowed Varsho to trott home for the starting shot before Sergio Alcántara increased the lead to 6-4 with a sacrifice fly to the left.

Chris Devenski (2-0) worked 1 2/3 innings of relief to claim the win. Mark Melancon managed the ninth for his 15th save in 18 opportunities.

MARINES 6, ANGELS 3

SEATTLE (AP) — Jesse Winker hit a grand slam, Marco Gonzales hit seven and the Mariners beat the Angels as Shohei Ohtani received a visit from coaches and kept fighting.

Winker’s slam — the second of the season for Seattle and the third of Winker’s career — gave Seattle a 5-1 lead and helped the Mariners stay in third place in the AL wildcard race. Eugenio Suárez added two hits and clinched a run.

Two-way sensation Ohtani was visited by coaches ahead of his second shot after colliding with Gonzales near the circle on the deck but stayed in the game.

Gonzales (7-11) snapped a two-game losing streak, giving up a walk and eight hits.

Andrés Muñoz, Penn Murfee and Paul Sewald combined for three scoreless innings of relief as Seattle went 22-9 in their last 31 games to an AL best. Sewald made his 14th save in 17 attempts.

Los Angeles starter Tucker Davidson (1-3) accepted defeat on his Angels debut.

RED 4, BREWER 2, 10 INNINGS

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Donovan Solano hit a sacrificial fly from Devin Williams (2-2) in the 10th inning and Cincinnati beat Milwaukee.

Solano also had an RBI double in eighth as the Reds won for the eighth time in 10 games.

Willy Adames and Keston Hiura scored for the Brewers. Hiura’s solo shot in the ninth game ended the game.

Third baseman Mike Brousseau made an error in the 10th that allowed the go-ahead run to score for the Reds.

Hiura, who homed on Saturday night in his first start since returning from Triple-A Nashville, led the ninth with his tenth homer of the season ahead of Hunter Strickland (3-3).

Ross Detwiler managed a perfect 10th for his second career save.

ROYALS 13, RED SOX 5

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Royals rookie MJ Melendez hit a three-run homer in the fifth inning and had six career-high RBIs to help Kansas City beat Boston.

7-8-9 hitters Michael Massey, Nate Eaton and Kyle Isbel provided most of the production as they went for a combined 6 for 9 with nine runs and five RBIs for the Royals.

Brad Keller (6-12) went six innings, allowing one run and four hits.

Cutter Crawford (3-4) gave up five earned runs over five innings.
