As the first film of Phase Five, the trailer reveals that Ant-Man (Paul Rudd) has come a long way. From an ex-con and Baskin-Robbins employee to a new superhero and an Avenger, Scott Lang is a new man. At this weekend’s D23 Expo, Rudd, Evangeline Liliand Jonathan Majors came on stage at the Anaheim Convention Center to tease us Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. Rudd explained that this film is “bananas” and unlike anything we’ve seen of the first two films. He also pointed out that Jonathan Majors’ Kang is throwing the whole film into new territory.
With that in mind, Marvel gave D23 audiences an exclusive trailer that offers a first look Quantumania. The trailer begins with Scott, Hope (Lilly) and Cassie Lang (Kathryn Newton) together in a car. When Hope turns on the radio, Scott’s own audio book is playing in the car instead, about the time wasting and how a mistake turned Scott into a baby. It’s pretty obvious that Scott heard his own book titled Watch out for the little guyand Hope and Cassie justifiably shame him for it.
But Scott has turned a new page. He’s an Avenger now. We already know that, oddly enough, Ant-Man had a pretty big impact on pop culture in the MCU. We saw him in Rogers the Musical, which suggests Ant-Man was around during the Battle of New York. As a newcomer, he enjoys some perks of fame, including being named Employee of the Century by Baskin-Robbins – though the odd person still mistakes him for Spider-Man. We see a shot of him enjoying coffee with him Randall Park‘s Jimmy Woo, who was Scott’s parole officer in the previous films.
Despite all this, there are still some problems at home. We see Scott and Hope posting bail for Cassie, who has been locked up for an unknown reason. Like father like daughter? But Cassie appears to be on good terms with the Pym-Van Dyne family. She calls Hank (MichaelDouglas) and Janet (Michelle Pfeiffer) family and also seems to be interested in the same kind of studies on the quantum realm. During the five-year hiatus, she studied the quantum realm and built a type of walkie-talkie that projects into the realm and also receives messages.
As impressed as the family is, Janet is shocked. It’s a two-way communication? She quickly demands that Cassie turn it off, but it’s too late. Something on the other side activates the device and the whole family – Scott, Cassie, Hope, Janet and Hank – are sucked into the Quantum Realm. There we see the scope and wonders of the kingdom and also meet Bill Murray‘s character, who seems to have a soft spot for Janet (much to Hank’s chagrin).
It may be a brand new location to explore, but it quickly becomes apparent that an insidious force exists. We cut to a scene between Kang (Majors) and Scott. Scott and Cassie are being held in separate holding cells when a dark-clad Kang enters the scene. Scott advertises that he’s an Avenger, but that piques Kang’s interest more than it stokes fear. He recalls knowing Scott and says “I killed you before.” While this confuses Scott, we understand Loki and the He-the-Remnant character that Kang has communicated with all other versions of himself in the multiverse. So there is a multiverse where Kang kills Scott.
But he’s not interested in killing him just yet. He’s here to enlist Scott’s help as a thief. Someone stole something from him and he wants it back. This isn’t a quick heist, however, and Scott has no interest in helping Kang. In response, Kang grabs Scott by the throat and slams him against the wall. Although the scene is short, it’s clear that Kang is a formidable opponent, and that’s just from a single conversation with him. If this is just the beginning of his presence in the MCU, then perhaps our heroes should be concerned.
Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania Premiered in theaters February 17, 2023.
