Calgary Flames

After Calgary Flames goaltender Jacob Markstrom missed Wednesday’s skate due to illness, he filled the starting net ahead of the Flames’ season opener tonight against the Colorado Avalanche, reports TSN’s Salim Valji.

In 63 regular-season games last season, Markstom compiled a record of 37-15-0 with 2.22 goals against average and a .922 save percentage.

Montreal Canadiens

The Montreal Canadiens have placed defenseman Mike Matheson on IR and recalled defenseman Corey Schueneman from Laval Rocket, the club said Thursday.

Matheson, 28, was previously recovering from a lower body injury. According to multiple reports, Matheson underwent an MRI on Wednesday.

A native of Pointe-Claire, QC., he was traded to his hometown Canadiens by the Pittsburgh Penguins, along with a fourth-round pick in the 2023 NHL Draft for Jeff Petry and Ryan Poehling. Matheson was drafted 23rd overall by the Florida Panthers in the 2012 NHL Draft, where he played five seasons (2015-19) before being traded to the Penguins with Colton Sceviour for Patric Hornqvist.

The 27-year-old Schueneman played 24 games for the Canadiens last season, recording two goals and four assists.

Schueneman, a Milford, Michigan product, ran in 68 games in two seasons with the Rocket (2020-21), scoring seven goals and 23 points.

Winnipeg Jets

The Winnipeg Jets put forward Dominic Toninato on waivers to be assigned to the AHL’s Manitoba Moose.

Toninato, 28, scored seven goals and 14 points in a career-high 77 games with the Jets last season and added an assist in two games with the Moose.

Toninato was a fifth-round pick by the Toronto Maple Leafs in 2012 and has 12 goals and 29 points in 164 career games with the Jets, Florida Panthers and Colorado Avalanche.

TSN’s John Lu shared the Jets’ lines in practice ahead of their first regular-season game on Friday against the New York Rangers.

Jets head coach Rick Bowness later told reporters that Axel Jonsson-Fjallby won’t play the Rangers on Friday but is expected to play the Dallas Stars on Monday after getting in some more practice this weekend.

Columbus blue jackets

The Columbus Blue Jackets announced Thursday that they have recalled center Kent Johnson from their AHL affiliate Cleveland Monsters and assigned goaltender Jet Greaves.

Johnson, a 19-year-old former fifth overall pick in the 2021 NHL draft, was loaned out to the Monsters just a day earlier when the Blue Jackets called the Greaves back in an emergency due to Elvis Merzlikins suffering from an illness ahead of the Blue Jackets’ season opener against the Carolina Hurricanes.

The Port Moody, BC native had three assists and two penalties in nine games with the Blue Jackets last season after completing his sophomore year at the University of Michigan. In his final season as Wolverine, Johnson scored 17 goals in 58 games and recorded 47 assists for 64 points.

The 21-year-old Greaves posted a 12-12-4 record during his rookie season with the Monsters with a 2.84 clean sheet average, a .905 save percentage and one shutout in 29 games.

Following his early departure from the Blue Jackets’ season opener, head coach Brad Larsen told reporters that Patrick Laine is still being evaluated after suffering an upper-body injury.

Laine, 24, suffered an upper body injury in the second half after colliding with Hurricanes defenseman Brett Pesce.

Drafted second overall by the Winnipeg Jets in the 2016 NHL Draft, Laine has 176 goals and 327 points in 407 career games split between the Jets and the Blue Jackets.

New York Islanders

New York Islanders goaltender Ilya Sorokin will face the Florida Panthers tonight, confirmed Islanders head coach Lane Lambert.

Sorokin, 27, was selected by the Islanders with the 78th overall pick of the 2014 NHL Draft. A native of Mezhdurechensk, Russia, begins his third season with the Islanders after spending six seasons with CSKA Moscow in the Kontinental Hockey League (2014-19).

Sorokin made 52 starts for the Islanders last season and compiled a 26-18-8 record with a 4.40 GAA, a .925 save rate and second-best seven shutouts in the league.

Pittsburgh penguins

Center Teddy Blueger will not be available for the Pittsburgh Penguins tonight when they play the Arizona Coyotes, confirmed Penguins head coach Mike Sullivan.

Sullivan told reporters that the 28-year-old’s status is day-to-day, although he used to run with the team.

The former 52nd overall pick of the 2012 draft played four seasons with the Penguins (2018-21) after playing four seasons with their AHL partner Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins (2015-18).

In 205 career NHL games, the Riga native has scored 31 goals and added 51 assists in Latvia.

New Jersey Devil

Before the New Jersey Devils game against the Philadelphia Flyers, Devils reporter Amanda Stein shared the lineup with Nico Hischier riding the top line.

Hischier later told reporters that he “isn’t where I want to be” and won’t be playing the Flyers tonight and is aiming to be ready for Saturday’s home game.
