Cooley, a center and the 2022 NHL draft #3 pick for the Arizona Coyotes, was a runner-up on USA Hockey’s National Team Development Program under-18 team last season with 75 points (27 goals, 48 assists) in 51 games.
The 2022 World Cup takes place from August 9th to 20th in Edmonton; Each game will be broadcast on NHL Network in the US and on TSN and RDS in Canada. The tournament was originally scheduled for December 26 through January. 5 in Edmonton and Red Deer, Alberta, however, has been postponed to December 29 due to coronavirus concerns.
“I think we just have to get together as a group, play as a team, and then I think the rest will take care of itself,” Cooley said.

Other first-round NHL draft selections on the US roster include defenseman Luke Hughes (New Jersey Devils, #4, 2021 NHL Draft) and forward Mackie Samoskevich (Florida Panthers, #24, 2021) and Matt Coronato (Calgary Flames, #13, 2021).
“It’s an honor to wear the jersey whenever possible,” said Hughes. “Going back there, of course, we won last year…going back and trying to defend that is very important to USA Hockey and our country. I think it’s really exciting and we’ll do our best. We go game after game and we’re really excited as a team.”
Two players were dropped from Sunday’s 25-man squad: forwards Frank Nazar (Chicago Blackhawks, #13, 2022) and defensemen Aidan Hreschuk (Columbus Blue jackets).
“We had a great week of practice followed by two good games before the tournament which helped us finalize our roster,” said John Vanbiesbrouck, US youth national team general manager. “We had a few spots to fill from December and we filled them well. These are tough decisions but we believe these are the top 25 players to reach our goal.”
The United States will look to win back-to-back titles for the first time after beating Canada 2-0 in the 2021 league game. Canada was the last team to do so, winning five consecutive times from 2005 to 2009.
There are four returning players in the roster of the team that won WJC 2021: Forwards Brett Berard (New York Rangers) and Landon Slaggert (Chicago Blackhawks) and defensemen Tyler Kleven (Senators from Ottawa) and Rock Faber (Minnesota Wild). Faber is captain; Slacks and Thomas Bordeleau (San Jose Sharks) will be assistant captains.
Forward Charlie Stramel, a 2023 NHL Draft qualifier, had 22 points (10 goals, 12 assists) in 26 games with the U.S. U-18 team last season.
Ten teams are taking part in the 2022 World Cup: Canada, Finland, Czech Republic, Slovakia and Latvia are in Group A. The United States, Sweden, Germany, Switzerland and Austria are in Group B.
Latvia was added to replace Russia, who were banned from international matches for their invasion of Ukraine.
