According to various online reports, a bug is warning some second-gen AirPods Pro users to “replace” their battery soon.
The bug appears to trigger battery change notifications from the Find My app on nearby devices when the AirPods Pro earbuds or MagSafe charging case battery is low. The second-gen AirPods Pro have improved Find My functionality, thanks to a U1 chip for precise searching, and broadcast their battery level at all times, so it’s likely that the alert is related to these new features.
The notifications prompt the user to replace the battery soon, although it is not possible to replace the AirPods batteries and the device simply needs to be charged. Users experiencing the error may not be immediately aware that it relates to their “AirPods Pro” as notifications refer to the item simply as “left”, “right” or “case”, resulting in something incoherent warnings.
The notifications appear to be similar to those used for the AirTag when its CR2032 battery is low and needs replacing, so it appears the system is merging the two products. A theory suggests that Apple used much of the AirTag firmware for the “MagSafe” charging case, causing identical alerts even if they don’t make sense.
Users have complained about the bug on the MacRumors forums and Reddit, but it’s not clear how widespread the problem is. While Apple has yet to confirm the bug, a software update will likely fix it in due course.
Thank you Isac!
