It’s been almost a year since we watched Spider-Man: No Way Home in theaters, but we’re all still thinking about the surprise ending in which Peter Parker (Tom Holland) will be erased from the memory of the whole world. However, the ending didn’t just hit the fans hard as a star Jakob Batalon was also shocked when he first heard about it No way homes plans. In an exclusive interview with Collider’s own Christina Radish to the Reginald the Vampirerevealed Batalon how he reacted to it No way home‘s script while also teasing future MCU appearances.
in the Spiderman: No way homeDoctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) is recruited to erase Spider-Man’s true identity from public memory. Unfortunately, the spell doesn’t work as planned and instead brings visitors from other realities into the MCU. The movie offers Alfred Molin‘s Doctor Octopus, Jamie Foxx‘s electro, Willem Dafoe‘s Green Goblin, Thomas Haden Church‘s Sandman, and Rhys Ifans‘ lizard. Toby Maguire and Andrew Garfield were also back as alternative variants of Peter Parker. At the end of the film, Peter sacrifices his identity to prevent other villains from getting to Earth-616. Now everyone, including his best friend Ned (Batalon), doesn’t know Peter was ever born. When asked how he felt reading it Now at home‘s script, Batalon talks about the emotional roller coaster ride that was part of this franchise. In his words:
“We all cried a lot on our last day at work. We all cried at the premiere. It was such a beautiful experience to be a part of, I think for all of us. We started at a very young age when we were essentially teenagers when we started the first film. And to really see the arc of the movies come together and all of our characters come full circle, I’d say it was crazy. It was a crazy thing to read. It was crazy to see Andrew and Tobey in the script. It was crazy having all the villains in the script. And of course nobody expected it to end like this, with such a cliffhanger. I would say it’s such a poignant ending for our films. It’s really an exclamation mark for the Spider-Man sequel, but maybe not with us, and I think that’s a great thing. In the end we may not necessarily be there, but it was still a nice ride.”
While Marvel Studios and Sony have remained silent about Spider-Man’s future in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, No way home felt more like the beginning of a new story than the end of the franchise. It’s almost certain that Spider-Man will be back in the future, which makes us wonder if Ned will be a part of the next movie too. However, Batalon hasn’t heard from the studios and isn’t sure if he’ll get the chance to return to the MCU. As Batalon tells us:
“I feel like actors are the last to know. I think people assume actors always have secrets. I promise you we don’t know anything. But again, if it’s the right place, at the right time, with the right group of people we’ve been with, I’d say why not? But other than that, whatever happens happens. Really, those decisions rest with the big bosses, the people who write the checks. We’re open to the idea, but we’re not hoping for it.”
As if wanting to return, Batalon says quite bluntly that he doesn’t have high hopes and is happy to have been part of the director JonWatts‘Trilogy. When asked how it would feel to work with another filmmaker in the franchise, Batalon said, “To be honest, I don’t give it too much thought. I feel like we’re all really moving in ways that we’re not really hoping it happens. Not that it’s bad, I just feel like we’re not really expecting another movie. I just feel like we’re all doing our own thing. But again, whatever happens, happens.”
