PLOT: The Creeper returns to terrorize Horror Hound contestants who win a chance to enter a Creeper-style escape room in a supposedly haunted house.
REVIEW: While I always thought The Creeper was an awesome monster that had the potential to become a new genre icon, the Jeeper’s Creepers Franchises are difficult to support and defend for a variety of reasons. Of course, the biggest problem is the fact that it was created by Victor Salva, who was convicted of molesting the young star of his 1989 film clown house. Lots of viewers who saw the first Jeeper’s Creepers in 2001 were unaware of Salva’s crimes — but now that there’s a greater awareness of what he’s been up to, some are understandably choosing not to watch his films at all. It hurts the films to know who made them. And while the first Jeeper’s Creepers was a good creature feature, the best sequence in the film – when the characters first meet The Creeper on the street and see him dump a body down a pipe – turned out to be lifted straight from an old episode of Unsolved Mysteries. So it’s not quite the performance it seemed anyway, and it was followed by two sequels that ranged from disappointing to downright bad. Still, The Creeper has potential. So it was good to hear that the franchise was rebooted with a “reimagining” from director Timo Vuorensola. Now we have Jeepers Creepers: Rebornwhich doesn’t have Salva’s name anywhere on it.
Unfortunately, it’s just another bad movie with The Creeper in it.
Written by Jake Seal and Sean-Michael Argo, Jeepers Creepers: Reborn begins with a recreation of the original film’s opening sequence. Encountering The Creeper on the street. The sight of him throwing a body down a pipe. The difference is that the characters who met up with The Creeper this time aren’t college-age siblings, but an older couple played by Dee Wallace and Gary Graham. This brings the scenario even closer to the real events dramatized in this episode of Unsolved Mysteries. This replica of a replica isn’t nearly as effective as the sequence in the first Jeeper’s Creepers was – luckily it turns out to be a dramatization itself. It’s a clip from a show called Macabre Secretsa nice allusion to it Unsolved Mysteries Origin.
Jeepers Creepers: Reborn takes place in a world where The Creeper is a well-known legend. This creature is said to appear in a certain part of Louisiana every 23 years, where it wreaks havoc and kills people for a period of 23 days. Devour human body parts to replace their own. For example: if The Creeper loses a hand, he can grow a new hand by eating a victim’s hand. After twenty-three days of chaos, it rests for another twenty-three years. The three Jeeper’s Creepers Movies are just movies based on the legend, the events in it were all fake. Now we’re seeing a real Creeper incident… and it’s incredibly mind-blowing.
The main characters are Creeper superfan Chase (Imran Adams) and his girlfriend Laine (Sydney Craven), who are introduced on their way to a horror dog event. Horror Hound is a real convention that agreed to be associated with this film, but the way it’s portrayed on screen is a far cry from what these shows really are. in the Jeepers Creepers: Reborn, Horror Hound is an outdoor festival featuring carnival games, haunted house attractions, fire breathers and sword eaters. There’s a special giveaway: a chance to enter a Creeper-style escape room set in a supposedly haunted nearby mansion. But when Chase and Laine win this giveaway, it’s clearly rigged. You’ve come into contact with too many shady people not to. It seems that The Creeper is surrounded by a cult here, much like Michael Myers halloween 6. And apparently Laine got her attention because she’s pregnant. Like Freddy Krueger in A nightmare at 5 Elm StreetThe Creeper needs some help from a “fruit-bearing tree”.
Given that this film is meant to be a revival of Jeeper’s Creepers franchise, isn’t it a good thing that it’s reminiscent of some of the least popular entries of other horror franchises. It also doesn’t work very well as a reintroduction of The Creeper himself. There’s nothing impressive about our first glimpses of him – and once we see him in action, it’s even worse. Now played by Jarreau Benjamin under redesigned makeup and wearing clothes stolen from a scarecrow, The Creeper in this film often comes across as cosplay but not a good cosplay as we see some Horror Hound festival fans do. Chunky cosplay that’s nowhere near what we’ve seen in the other films.
This second-rate creeper is thrown into a movie with mediocre characters who bounce off awkward, poorly-written dialogue… and it doesn’t get interesting until more than halfway through its 88-minute running time. The set up of The Creeper stalking and attacking people in a crumbling mansion is kind of fun, but it doesn’t make up for how terrifying the first half of the film is. I thought The Creeper might be a horror icon, but apparently it’s too difficult to make a good one Jeeper’s Creepers movie for it. Given who created it, that might be for the best.
Vuorensola insists Salva is not benefiting Jeepers Creepers: Reborn in no way, especially given the elements he introduced in the first Jeeper’s Creepers were redesigned and redesigned for this one. However, some are concerned that Salva made money off the money that he must have been paid for the rights at some point. I can’t say for sure, I don’t know the financial details. I’ll say that if you decide to skip Jeepers Creepers: Reborn To make sure you’re not endorsing Salva in any way, don’t miss out on much. Jeepers Creepers: Reborn is completely skippable.
Jeepers Creepers: Reborn hits select theaters across the country on September 30th. A VOD release will follow on October 4th.
