Who are the current worshipers of Defender of Coyotes? Jacob Chychrun as trade talks intensify? How did they Rasmus Sandin Contract end? After extension Spencer Knight, what to make of Florida’s goalie situation? is David Pastrnak near an extension? TSN Hockey Insiders discuss this and more.

Are teams trying to win over Arizona Coyotes defenseman Jakob Chychrun?

Darren Dreger: It’s no secret that Jakob Chychrun still wants out of the Arizona Coyotes, but the Arizona Coyotes still tell everyone they’re willing to be patient. Although now that the regular season is rapidly approaching, it’s clear that commercial interest in Chychrun is once again on the rise. Some say the Coyotes have at least eased somewhat in their expected rate of return and are now more willing to accept a contract or contracts. Granted, you have to have a first-round draft pick, you have to have a prospect involved in all of this, so demand is still high. Interested teams now include the Ottawa Senators, Toronto Maple Leafs, Edmonton Oilers, Los Angeles Kings, St. Louis Blues, Columbus Blue Jackets, among others. However, it is a challenge. Despite the quality of the player and the contract, there are some cap hurdles that many of the teams just mentioned have to overcome.

Pierre Le Brun: Speaking of defenders…Rasmus Sandinended his stalemate with the Toronto Maple Leafs, of course, and this is interesting because you know, after Jordi Benn was knocked out in Wednesday night’s preseason game with injury, you could be like, ‘Wow, more leverage for again Rasmus Sandin‘ because the Leafs desperately need him back, but it’s being traded as a reverse situation in a way Rasmus Sandin woke up that day and told you Embedded Imageknow what ‘I need to help my team.’ I spoke to Sandin’s agent Lewis Gross, who said that’s exactly what happened, that they reached out to Leafs GM Kyle Dubas and said, “Okay, we’re ready to end this,” and Sandin essentially did kind of a signed deal the Leafs had out there all along. Although the Leafs also agreed to a one-year deal during this process, Sandin signs for $1.4 million and openly confronts his teammates about what it could have been, maybe he could have stuck with a bigger deal.

Dreger: A bit of panic broke out among the Toronto Maple Leafs, even during the game against the Montreal Canadiens when two defenders went down. I’m told that Leafs management actually made calls to the National Hockey League asking about some defenders who are still in camp for PTOs. So, no question, still trying to build depth in this position.

Any chance of a goalie becoming available in Florida?

LeBrun: I don’t think it’s going to happen this year, but there are certainly a lot of people who were intrigued when the Florida Panthers extended Spencer Knight to a three-year, $4.5 million deal earlier this week, which will see them earn a total of $14.5 starting next year Sergei Bobrovsky still on the books by 2025-26 at $10 million. Look, I’ve made a few calls, and here are a few things I’ve been told about this fascinating situation. One is that the Florida Panthers have been seriously concerned about this Spencer Knight were going to be on the bid list next summer, and they didn’t want to be put in a position where they couldn’t handle that number. They don’t want draft picks, they’re in win mode, so they wanted to be aggressive and get ahead of this situation. The other thing I would say is yeah Sergei Bobrovsky is still signed long-term at $10 million a year, but as we’ve seen Corey Crawford and Carey Prize and Ben BishopGoalkeepers don’t always age well so we’ll see how this all plays out over the next 2-3 years as much as Bobrovsky and Spencer Knight.

What’s new David Pastrnak?

Dreger: Well, you see, I mean, we’re talking about a superstar player in Pastrnak with the Boston Bruins, and it’s a process. We often use this word when talking about extensions or negotiation periods. Both sides are accessing the market right now. I can tell you that contract discussions have been heating up since the training camp opened. Relatively quiet over the summer. Not uncommon. There were a few preliminary talks during the draft. Pastrnak understands and is clearly confident that something will get done sooner or later, but the Bruins continue to do their due diligence.
