The third beta of iOS 16.1, released earlier this week, extends the Adaptive Transparency feature introduced with the second-gen AirPods Pro to the original AirPods Pro.

As mentioned on Reddit, first-generation AirPods Pro owners who also have AirPods Beta software will now see an “Adaptive Transparency” toggle in the AirPods section of the Settings app. Beta firmware 5A304A is required to view the setting.

Apple introduced Adaptive Transparency with the “AirPods Pro” 2. It was designed to allow the AirPods to block out loud noises such as sirens, construction work or speakers at a concert without blocking out all sounds.

The ‌AirPods Pro‌ 2 have an improved H2 chip that allows Adaptive Transparency to work, so it’s not yet clear how Adaptive Transparency will work compared to the H1 chip in the original ‌AirPods Pro‌.
