Why is the GeForce RTX 40 series disappointing?
We haven’t had any play time with NVIDIA’s new graphics cards, but people are already showing how irritated they are with the new cards’ specs and prices. The NVIDIA GeForce RTX 40 GPU series is the next generation for Team Green and promises greatly improved performance at different price points.
NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang recently claimed that “Moore’s Law is dead” during a virtual press conference attended by Windows Central. “And the opportunity for Moore’s Law to deliver twice the performance for the same cost or the same performance and half the cost every year and a half is gone. It’s completely over.”
The company probably doesn’t lie when it comes to the manufacturing cost of the 40-series cards. The pandemic, lockdowns and global component shortages haven’t helped, and neither has likely the return to TMSC as a manufacturing partner. NVIDIA has teamed up with Samsung for the GeForce RTX 30 series.
It’s no secret that NVIDIA has plenty of RTX 30 series cards in stock that the company needs to get rid of, and prices have already come down. This likely affects the MSRP that can be set for the new RTX 40 series as both generations are carefully positioned side by side. And right now, there really isn’t much choice for gamers who want the latest NVIDIA GPU.
The GeForce RTX 4090 is the current flagship, followed by two RTX 4080 cards. One has 16GB of RAM and the other has 12GB. There are also differences in the number of cores, clock speeds and other specifications. Many believe that the less powerful RTX 4080 should actually be an RTX 4070. Then there’s the size of these GPUs, especially from AIB partners.
Take the mighty ZOTAC GAMING GeForce RTX 4090 AMP Extreme AIRO (quite a mouthful). This monster is 3.5 PCI slots wide. That’s right, you will lose four PCI slots in your case (and possibly the motherboard) if you use this GPU. Other AIB cards do not differ much in size. It’s safe to say that not everyone is happy with NVIDIA right now.
Finally, RIP EVGA.
NVIDIA GeForce RTX 40 series memes
There has been an avalanche of memes surrounding the launch of NVIDIA’s RTX 40 series. We’ll round up some of our favorites here. Reddit user homecydxl posted the following meme on the PC Master Racer subreddit, which perfectly depicts what NVIDIA will be announcing in due course.
Next comes the Reddit user Crashed TestDumy who compiled a list of all the fastest graphics cards that NVIDIA has released with a 192-bit memory bus. They are all x60 GPUs except for one that is clearly the exception and is not the GeForce GTX 660. (Hint: It’s the 12GB GeForce RTX 4080!)
Finally we have this meme posted by a Reddit user TohsakaRinya. It probably sums up exactly how NVIDIA’s marketing team sees its customers, at least from a PC gamer’s perspective.
We will have the new NVIDIA GeForce RTX 40 series for review soon. So stay tuned to Windows Central for more in-depth coverage as we try to discern if the reality of the RTX 40 series matches NVIDIA’s claims.
