Disney is hosting its annual D23 Expo this weekend, and that means plenty of teasers, trailers, casting news, and fun cameos. The streaming platform’s Star Wars offerings this year included our first look at Season 3 of The Mandalorianas well as a final trailer for the limited series, Andorand a trailer for a new animated anthology series, Tales of the Jedi.
(Spoilers below.)
We’ve been longing for the new adventures of Grogu and his Mandalorian space father (Pedro Pascal) since their heartfelt reunion in the finale of Boba Fett’s book– aka The Mandalorian Season 2.5. (Din Djarin had sent Grogu for Jedi training with Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill), but the bond between the two proved far stronger. Sniff.) The teaser captures some of the highlights of the S1 and S2 adventures of this “Clan of two” before giving us a glimpse of what’s to come.
Remember that Din broke Mandalorian protocol by removing his helmet twice: once to save Grogu and once to bid farewell to the adorable green Jedi baby. This didn’t sit well with his people, particularly Katie Sackhoff’s Bo Katan and the Armorer (Emily Swallow), who insists, “You’re not a Mandalorian anymore.” Bo Katan covets the Darksaber, which Din won by beating Moff Gideon ( Giancarlo Esposito) in battle, technically making him the ruler of Mandalore.
Din seems far more interested in hopping the galaxy with Grogu than sitting on a throne, though he’s keen on getting back into Mandalorian favor. But I doubt he’s as keen on giving up the darksaber. The political intrigue and simmering tensions suggested here should keep things interesting. We also get a glimpse of a thriving Greef Carga (Carl Weathers) and Peli Motto (Amy Sedaris) providing Mando with a new R2 unit for his Naboo starfighter. And of course there are plenty of battles and fancy spaceship maneuvers.
The third season of The Mandalorian will be released on Disney+ in February 2023.
Andor
Meanwhile, the premiere of Andor is only two weeks away. As we previously reported, the story begins with the Empire’s destruction of Cassian Andor’s (Diego Luna) homeworld and charts his transformation from a “anti-revolution” cynic to a key player in the burgeoning rebellion willing to side with him sacrifice save the galaxy.
The ensemble cast also includes Genevieve O’Reilly as Mon Mothma, a Republic Senator who helped found the Rebel Alliance, and Forest Whitaker, who reprises his Villain One Role as Clone Wars veteran Saw Gerrera. Stellan Skarsgård (as Luthen) and Adria Arjona team up to play the resistance fighters who recruit Andor to the cause. Kyle Soller, Denise Gough, Fiona Shaw, Robert Emms and David Hayman were all cast in undisclosed roles.
We got our first look at the series with a behind-the-scenes teaser in December 2020 during Disney’s investor day. We got a brief teaser at Star Wars Celebration earlier this year, and just last month got a full trailer. Luna was on hand to present the latest trailer, which includes some cool new footage. We’ve also learned that the series will have a “spy thriller” atmosphere, filled with “danger, deception and intrigue”; These elements seem to dominate this final trailer. And apparently the timeline jumps forward every three episodes.
The first three episodes of Andor Premiered on Disney+ on September 21, 2022. The remaining nine episodes will air weekly, concluding on November 23, 2022. A 12-episode second season will reportedly lead directly into the events of Villain One.
The Last Jedi
Bad news first: If you’re a fan of the Star Wars animated series The bad batchthe release of the second season was pushed back from September 28, 2022 to January 4, 2023. But there’s also good news: Disney+ will be launching a new animated anthology series. The Last Jedifully on October 26, 2022. The streaming platform released the official trailer during D23 Expo.
The Last Jedi is in the same way as 2021 Star Wars Visions, another anthology series consisting of seven animated short films, each created by a different Japanese anime studio. Each of the six 15-minute episodes, created by Dave Filoni and Charles Murray, will feature a fan-favorite Jedi. Some are set before the Clone Wars, while others are set decades earlier. For example, it looks like one episode will get us the Ahsoka Tano origin story while another focuses on Count Dooku, both of which are part of the master lineage associated with Qui-on Jinn. And yes, Liam Lesson will voice the latter.
