NEW YORK (AP) — Carlos Correa responded to boos from Yankees fans with a two-run tie homer in the eighth inning, and the Minnesota Twins beat New York 4-3 Thursday night to avoid a four-game sweep .
Correa’s two-out drive against former Fordham pitcher Greg Weissert followed an unsuccessful video review called by the Yankees after New York thought it should have been the third out. The Yankees claimed Wandy Peralta (2-4) came on in time for the first time after a flip by first baseman Marwin Gonzalez on Jake Caves grounder, but replays showed Peralta caught the ball with his glove against his body.
Yankees manager Aaron Boone jumped out of the dugout to argue with crew chief Larry Vanover, throwing up his hands in frustration before walking off the field.
“I think he’s out and we have to live with the (call) stands, so that’s just how the system works,” Boone said.
An out later, Correa connected with a 1-2 slider for his 18th homer, his second in two days. It gave Minnesota a 4-2 lead and he smacked his chest toward his dugout while rounding third base.
“There’s extra motivation when you’re playing on a big stage like Yankee Stadium and you’re the bad guy,” said Correa, a New York fan target for his role in the Houston Astros cheating scandal. “The fans are in the game every single moment and there’s a little more adrenaline, a little more focus, a little more hunger, just winning games.”
As of early 2017, the Twins are 2-16 in regular-season games at Yankee Stadium.
“It’s a challenging place to play,” said Twins manager Rocco Baldelli. “The environment is challenging and they are a good team.”
The AL East leading Yankees are 4.5 games ahead of Tampa Bay and going into a weekend series against the Rays. New York is six games ahead of the Toronto Blue Jays.
