Have you ever wondered what happens when you get the most powerful factory Mustang ever made, the ford Mustang Shelby GT500, and want to increase its power and performance even further? This car would be every gearhead’s dream car. The vehicle would resemble a powerful, futuristic monster that would rule the streets. And that’s exactly what Hennessey did. In particular, the hypercar maker and creator of high-performance vehicles is famous for “making fast cars faster.” The Hennessey team took a legendary machine and turned it into the extraordinary Venom 1200 Mustang GT500, capable of producing 1,200 hp at 7,600 rpm and 902 lb-ft of torque at 5,200 rpm.
“The stock Shelby GT500 is an exceptional muscle car, but we’re taking it to the nth level with our Venom 1200,” said John Hennessey, company founder and CEO. “Our engineers were able to extract more than 400 additional horsepower from the engine, which brings the performance to the level of a supercar. Only a handful of vehicles in the world offer this level of performance… especially at this price.”
The Hennessey team took the Ford Mustang Shelby GT500, which was equipped with a hand-built 5.2-liter supercharged V8 engine with 760 hp and 625 lb-ft of torque, increasing its power output by a staggering 58 percent. It goes without saying that Hennessey has created a behemoth and one of the most potent Mustang variants the Texas company has ever shipped.
The Ford Mustang Shelby GT500
The 2022 Ford Shelby GT500 is equipped with a 5.2-liter supercharged V8 engine (760 hp, 625 lb-ft) and has a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission and rear-wheel drive. Other standout features include ultra-high-performance Brembo brakes, adaptive suspension, 20-inch wheels and high-performance Michelin Pilot S tires.
Edmunds took this amazing vehicle for a ride and tested its performance and got some really remarkable results. The Shelby GT500 accelerated from 0 to 60 mph in 3.8 seconds and did the quarter mile in just 11.3 seconds at 130.7 mph. Equally impressive was that the 2022 Ford Shelby GT500 took just 30 yards to come to a full stop from 60 mph. Considering that the usual 60 mph stopping distance is between 120 and 140 feet, we can all agree that the Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 is exceptional.
Although I was delighted with the performance, Edmunds was unimpressed by the fuel efficiency and onboard technology. With EPA ratings of 12 miles per gallon city and 18 miles per gallon on the highway (for 14 miles per gallon combined), the Shelby GT500 fails to impress. It’s worth noting that most automakers and industry experts agree that good gas mileage comes to at least 23 miles per gallon.
However, it’s doubtful that muscle car fans really care about EPA ratings or rising gas prices. Edmunds is even more disappointed with the onboard technology, noting that “Ford has been so stingy with what appears to be fundamental technology in the GT500.”
“Navigation and a decent audio system are bundled in the optional technology package,” Edmunds adds. “You need this pack to get driving aids like blind spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert. The lap timer and g-meter can’t even come close to making up for that.”
Despite its flaws, the 2022 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 is still a great car and a beast on the road. Luckily, muscle car enthusiasts can enjoy the even more impressive Venom 1200 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 that ups the horsepower and performance.
These are the upgrades and tweaks that make the Venom 1200 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 a road beast
Hennessey boasts of having elevated the Ford Shelby GT500 to “supercar” level, and he’s right. In-house engineers have extensively modified the factory configuration to significantly increase power and torque. For example, they added a higher-capacity 3.8-liter supercharger system, an all-new high-flow air intake system, and an air/oil separator system.
In addition, they upgraded the anodized billet fuel rails and high-flow fuel injectors. In addition, the Hennessey team revised the dual-clutch transmission and updated the fittings, lines, belts and tensioners. Finally, the team calibrated the Venom 1200 Mustang GT500 on Hennessey’s in-house dynamometer before it was tested on the road.
Hennessey stands behind the reliability of his cars and the caliber of his work; As such, it offers a 1 year/12,000 mile warranty on every Venom 1200 conversion. Petrolheads can pick up the Venom 1200 package for an MSRP starting at $59,950, which includes the engine upgrades, Hennessey and Venom 1200 exterior badge, and a special serial numbered plaque limited to 66 units. In addition, buyers can also install the optional 1966 Daytona 24-hour livery on their build. This upgrade costs an additional $4,950.
