Samsung has been around since the very first wave of smartwatches, so it’s fair to say it’s a true veteran that knows what it’s doing. The Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 lineup is the culmination of some very impressive technology, and the same goes for its predecessors, like the Galaxy Watch 4 and Galaxy Watch 3. From humble beginnings, Samsung’s watches can now play your Spotify tunes and a whole lot track activities and even measure your body composition.

But did you know that they can also take screenshots? So if you spotted something on your watch — maybe a message that was amusingly cut off by the smaller screen, or your current favorite song — you can quickly take a screenshot and share it with your friends. Best of all, you can do this on either the new Galaxy Watch range with Wear OS, or older smartwatches with Tizen. Here’s how.

How to take a screenshot on your Galaxy Watch 4 or newer

Taking a screenshot on the Galaxy Watch 4 or Watch 5 is extremely easy and only requires pressing two buttons. Here’s how to do it.

Step 1: Go to the screen you want to scan.

Step 2: Press the home + side buttons at the same time.

Galaxy Watches prior to the Galaxy Watch 4 ran Samsung’s Tizen homebrew operating system. As a result, when you take a screenshot on a Galaxy Watch 3 or older, you’re doing something different. However, it should be just as easy to execute.

Step 1: Navigate to the screen you want to take a screenshot of.

Step 2: Shut home press and swipe from left to right.

Where to find your screenshots

You’ll need to find your screenshots after you’ve taken them, of course, and you’ll find them all in the same place, regardless of your watch’s operating system. Just open your watch’s app list and select yours gallery apartment

It’s a bit trickier if you want to take the screenshot on your smartphone, and the methods differ depending on which smartwatch you’re using.

With the Galaxy Watch 4 or later

If you’re signed in to Google on your Galaxy Watch, your screenshots should automatically upload to your Google Photos account watch Album. Otherwise you can open yours gallery app on your watch, open the picture you want to send to your phone, long-press it, and then tap Send to phone. You will then find it in the watch folders of your phone gallery apartment

With the Galaxy Watch 3 or earlier

If you’re using a Galaxy Watch 3 or an older device that uses Samsung’s Tizen operating system, you’ll need to manually send the pictures to your phone. Go to your watch as in the example above gallery app, choose the picture you want to transfer, long press on it and select it Send to phone. It will then be found in your phone’s Gallery app.

Why can’t I take screenshots in certain apps?

There are certain apps that you will find that you cannot take screenshots of. For example, any money apps you have probably don’t allow screenshots. That’s not to annoy you – it’s to prevent sensitive data from being stolen from your smartwatch. You might think this is a bit silly since you want to take a screenshot of your data, but keep in mind that the smartwatch can’t really tell the difference between you and malicious software that wants to steal your data. So it’s easier to lock screenshots for specific apps.

In other examples, of course, it is for copyright protection and done in other ways. This is less likely to show up on a smartwatch, but phones often don’t let you take screenshots in the Netflix app – the image just comes up black.
