When a game’s online servers are down, players typically don’t get a chance to step out in a confident glow of glory before the final dawn arrives. But then again, most games don’t have the bizarre kidney Creator, Yoko Taro, as its director.

The game in question is SINOALICE, the free-to-play RPG mobile action gacha game by Square Enix for iOS and Android. In it you play fairy tale characters like Snow White, Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty and Princess Kaguya who struggle to revive their authors to give them a happy ending. At some point down the line the fight to a happy ending came with the help of kidney and Drakengard 3 Characters during special collaboration events. However, for Hong Kong, Taiwan and Macau players: SinoAliceThe servers going offline on November 10 coincides with a special mission designed by Taro. Upon completion, players will be logged out of the game forever.

“After erasing the entire last arc, a[n] End clip is played. Once this clip is over, you will be forcibly logged out. After that you can never. Protocol. I never. Again,” chinese_englisha Twitter fan account that translates SinoAliceWrote tweets from the official account. “Please put everything away before you set foot,” “NieR fans will understand.

Spoiler alert for Nier: Automata.

Meta end missions in a Taroverse game are not a new phenomenon. in the Nier: Automata‘s ending E, players had to decide whether they wanted it or not delete all their game data in exchange for helping another player during the final boss fight of the game. While the ending of E’s evoked a sense of camaraderie with his teammates SinoAlice develops into a lonely final and brutal curtain.

According to sino_english, the game’s co-op feature will be turned off and players will face off against a “very strong” boss. If you lose, you cannot continue. Nine out of ten today SinoAliceThe final missions of , called Verse, have been released. SinoAliceThe tenth and final verse of is expected to be released on November 3rd, giving players seven days to complete the mobile game’s final story mission. This denouement is particularly brutal considering that in gacha games, players invest a significant portion of their disposable income into unlocking characters and the like. Not being able to log in and see their bright and shiny anime faces is a fate I wouldn’t wish on my worst enemy.

“Once you reach the end, the library will be closed forever. After that there is no turning back. Even if you want to help your friends finish the chapter, there’s no way to help directly. Everything will be gone when it’s over,” wrote sino_english.

Given that SinoAlice‘s story is already Hella Meta with its cute fairy tale characters fighting for the chance of a happy ending. My Money is on Taro, giving players an even more meta ending in the game’s final cinematic. Hopefully, SinoAlice‘s ending will not compare to the similarly premature Shonen Jump fantasy manga, The Hunters Guild: Red Hoodwhere characters made fun of themselves the cancellation of the manga. Chief among them was its main antagonist, who proved that subtlety is for the cowardly, saying, “A story that isn’t entertaining is abandoned. Once given up, our world will disappear.” Let’s just hope SinoAlice‘s cast of hopeful characters will live happily ever after.
