The majority of people who come to me for nutritional advice say one of two things: they think they eat pretty healthy and know what to do, they just don’t.
First of all, just because we know it doesn’t mean we will. Our thoughts dictate our actions and often the people I work with are so depressed and discouraged from their many disappointing diet experiences that they begin to believe the lie that they will never achieve their health goals.
Second, there is a clear difference between a healthy and balanced diet. You can choose perfectly healthy foods, but if you don’t know how to eat them properly – in the right combinations, in the right portions, and at the right frequency – even healthy foods can spike your blood sugar levels, prompting your body to to save yourself fat.
If you’ve been following me for a while, you’ve probably seen something about the importance of blood sugar stabilization. Balanced blood sugar is super important. So important that it’s how our bodies work.
Newborns are checked to make sure their blood sugar levels are stable before they leave the hospital. Babies naturally maintain this stability. Anyone who has children knows that a baby or toddler is hungry as soon as they wake up.
Babies are fed breast milk or formula, which is a perfect balance of protein, fat and carbohydrates to help stabilize blood sugar. Even when growing, not much changes.
When kids start eating solid foods, heaven forbid leaving the house with a small child in tow and not bringing a snack, am I right? That’s her drop in blood sugar. They get “hungry” and start pestering you for a snack.
The same process takes place in our adult bodies, but in our busy world and with all these diets in mind that say don’t eat that or even don’t eat if you want to shed that weight. we suck on it and ignore those cues to eat.
Our bodies haven’t changed much since childhood in the way we absorb and metabolize food, we’ve just become bigger people. And the bigger we get, the crazier our eating habits seem to get.
No fat, skipping carbs, counting calories, eating nothing at night, eating nothing in the morning, eating three meals a day and not snacking, eating five meals a day and yes, snacking — the constant barrage of information overload with, frankly, bad ones Information puts the majority of our population either on a diet roller coaster that they just can’t seem to get off, or so confused they aren’t doing anything.
how does this work for you I dare say it sure isn’t. Almost 30 percent of adults in Canada are obese and more than 31 percent of children ages 12 to 17 are obese. (The 2012-13 figures were the most recent data I could find for childhood obesity.)
It’s clear that dieting doesn’t work and certainly not doing nothing. What works is stabilizing blood sugar.
Blood sugar stabilization works for every body. That’s how we entered this world, and the sooner we come back to it, the sooner we’ll see things change. But dieting doesn’t teach you that because the dieting industry is a multi-billion dollar industry and if you found something that worked for you, your spouse, your children, anywhere, in any situation, you would never diet again . That would not be good for their bottom line.
Instead of depriving yourself of restricting foods, counting calories, or eliminating entire food groups, why not learn to eat the foods you love in a way that creates hormonal balance, stabilizes blood sugar, boosts metabolism, and Takes your body to a place where it’s good it naturally releases stored fat, protects lean muscle, increases energy and eliminates cravings?
You create a healthy inflammatory response — inflammation is the root cause of all disease, by the way — you lower your risk of metabolic diseases like diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, stroke, heart disease, and stroke, and you create health in your body as your body sheds weight naturally.
It’s really easy. Eating foods in the right combinations, in the right portions, and at the right frequency throughout the day will do all of this.
One thing to remember, it’s not a diet. That means the results don’t usually come overnight. But they will happen, and in a healthy way.
Wherever you are on your health journey, it didn’t happen overnight and it can take time to reverse these effects. How long this lasts usually depends on how long your body has been living in a deprived state and out of balance.
What I do know, however, is that it’s less about your age and more about how long you’ve been doing/not doing the things that benefit your health and your body.
