“This is the earliest emergence of flu cases in several years, but now we can expect more cases to emerge across our region,” said Krystal Drouin, infectious disease program coordinator at the health unit.

She expects: “This season will be a different season for respiratory infections.”

Drouin said there has not been a widespread spread of influenza and other respiratory infections in the last two years due to COVID public health measures, but “we expect an increase this year”.

According to the PHU, “Influenza spreads easily from person to person through coughing and sneezing and through direct contact with surfaces contaminated with the virus. People who get the flu may have a fever, cough, sore throat, muscle aches and pains, headache, and fatigue. Children may also experience ear pain, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.”

If you do get sick, Drouin recommends that you stay home to avoid spreading the flu to others, get some rest, drink plenty of fluids, and wash your hands frequently to reduce the risk of spreading the flu to others reduce.

“If your symptoms worsen, you should see your GP.”

Because COVID-19 and influenza infections share similar symptoms, PHU recommends people who are eligible for COVID-19 testing and treatment get tested.

“To protect yourself and prevent the spread of influenza in your community,” Drouin suggests following public health measures such as: E.g. washing hands, coughing and sneezing into your sleeve, getting vaccinated, keeping frequently touched surfaces clean, staying at home if sick, keeping two meters away from others and wearing a mask.

“The best way to prevent flu and flu-related complications is to get vaccinated,” Drouin said. “You may be healthy and think you don’t need to protect yourself, but in fact you could be spreading the infection to someone who is at higher risk of complications, such as someone who has a cancer.” B. Elderly people or small children.”

The flu vaccine is available at many doctor’s offices, pharmacies, and mass vaccination clinics.

PHU will begin conducting flu vaccination clinics on Monday, October 31. Anyone over the age of five can be vaccinated against influenza and COVID at the same visit. To schedule an appointment, visit the Porcupine Health Unit website online (phu.fyi/flu-shot) or call your local PHU office.
