PITTSBURGH– The Pittsburgh Penguins won their 300th game during the tenure of coach Mike Sullivan, defeating the Los Angeles Kings 6-1 Thursday at PPG Paints Arena.

Sullivan has the most wins by a coach in Penguins history ahead of Dan Bylsma (252). He is 300-156-55 since he was hired on December 12, 2015.

Sullivan also coached the Boston Bruins from 2003 to 2006 and has a career NHL record of 370-212-93.

“It’s humbling. It means a lot,” Sullivan said. “I’m grateful to the players. They’re the guys that go out there and deserve the wins for us. Those guys that I’ve coached in my time here work so hard to achieve the success we’ve had on the ice. I I’m grateful to those guys. They’re the ones who make the sacrifices every day.”

Six players scored, and Tristan Jarry made 39 saves for Pittsburgh (3-0-1), who have beaten their opponents 18-5 in three home games. Jarry has allowed five goals on 104 shots (0.952 percent save) in three starts this season.

“I think I just want to get better every year,” Jarry said. “Every year I want to make a step. Every year when I come in I’m a little more mature. I’ve got a little more games under me I think. So just being able to start and knowing what to expect.” , it only helps.”

Cal Petersen three goals on nine shots in the first half for Los Angeles (3-3-0), who had won three times in a row. Jonathan Schnell replaced Petersen and made 22 saves in the last two periods.

“I think there’s no secret with Cal that we need to get him going,” said Kings coach Todd McLellan. “He has to play the way he can play. He’s an NHL goaltender. He’s an outstanding young man who’s played extremely well at that level. We’re trying, just like we would do with forwards and defenders, to get him there to get where he can be. He has to be better.”

Jan Ruetta gave the Penguins a 1-0 lead, at 4:04 the first on their first shot, snapped past a screen Jason Sugar.

Jake Guentzel made it 2-0 at 2:35 p.m. with his third goal in four games. Kris Letang split the defense to charge under the goal line before passing back to Guentzel for a tip-in.

He left the game after upping a Letang shot at 6:51 of the third period and was scored after the game, Sullivan said.

Rickard Rackel extended to 3:0 (18:19). After a one-timer of Jeff Petry went off the left post, Rakell went through the crease behind Petersen for a backhand before falling over the Kings defender Drew Doughty.

“Looking at our start, I thought we played the way we wanted to play,” McLellan said. “We played fast. We were aggressive, forcing them into situations where they had to turn the puck. Things went pretty well for us. Even after the first goal I thought we reacted well. Unfortunately, that wasn’t the case.”

Petry made it 4-0 on a power play and scored his first goal for the Penguins at 4:13 with a wrist shot through traffic.

“Getting the first one is a relief,” Petry said. “I’ve had a few looks, had a few good shots. It’s good to have that under my belt.”

Jeff Carter hit Brand Clarke for a short breakaway before shooting five holes and extending it to 5-0 at 3:01 of the third. Ryan Pohling made it 6-0 with a short slap shot from the high slot at 4:38.

Carl Grundstrom scored the only goal for Los Angeles with a one-timer from the left faceoff circle, leaving 2:28 on a power play.

“Being 3-0 down after the first quarter certainly doesn’t help,” said the Kings captain Anze Kopitar said. “I didn’t think our game was that bad. Just a couple of tough breaks. We’re 3-0 down and then obviously you’re catching up. You’re trying to make an impact. It didn’t happen tonight .”
