Warning: Contains MAJOR spoilers for Black Adam!
After introducing a full team for the Justice Society of America, Black Adam sees the death of Doctor Fate. Played by Pierce Brosnan, Doctor Fate is an old friend of Aldis Hodges Hawkman (aka Carter Hall). He serves as a calmer presence throughout the film, giving the JSA a more cautious outlook as Hawkman continually attempts to defeat Black Adam in physical combat.
In the comics, Doctor Fate is a founding member of the Justice Society and Black Adam uses Kent Nelson as a retired member of the team coming back to help with one last job. Based on historical film tropes about retired heroes and their final mission, it’s perhaps not surprising that Doctor Fate dies Black Adam. However, the preparations for Doctor Fate’s death at the hands of Sabbac are still shocking, and there are many questions surrounding Doctor Fate’s death Black Adam Death, his decision to fight Sabbac alone, and whether Kent Nelson or Doctor Fate have a DCEU future.
Why Doctor Fate was happy to die
After having a vision showing Hawkman dying in the finale Black Adam fights, Doctor Fate prevents the rest of the Justice Society from entering the palace ruins in Kandaq to fight Sabbac himself. By doing this, he appears to be able to prevent his vision from happening. However, this requires the death of Kent Nelson, a fact Doctor Fate seemed to be aware of while fighting Sabbac.
The Sacrifice of Doctor Fate in Black Adam makes sense to save Hawkman since the two have obviously been close friends for a long time. That doesn’t necessarily explain the outspoken joy Kent Nelson seems to feel at his death, however. However, Doctor Fates Black Adam Death is caused by his reluctance to use his powers. While his helm grants him great powers, the helm also possesses him to a degree, taking away some of his control. Through these powers he has been able to see what the future holds for many years and is noted to have been around for at least 100 years. Doctor Fate’s joy at his death comes from the freedom it grants him from the helmet and a determined fate as he finally has nothing left to worry about.
Doctor Fate’s Visions Explained (And Why He Might Change Them)
Doctor Fate’s visions of the future carry through Black Adam as seemingly immovable results of history. These seem to match Doctor Fate’s name as inescapable. Again, the notion that this vision of the future cannot be changed fits the narratives of countless films and television shows that have explored the results of looking into the future.
However, during Black Adam only shows one future that Doctor Fate sees, which is a pretty cheap move by the DC film as Kent Nelson reveals he actually saw multiple possibilities. This is much more akin to the future seen in the culmination of the MCU’s Infinity Saga of Doctor Strange (a character who had an influence on later versions of the comic book depiction of Doctor Fate, an influence that becomes apparent upon viewing Black Adam). While Doctor Fate saw a future where Hawkman died, Black Adam never showed the vision that fate had, where instead Kent Nelson died. He could discern the paths to the various fates, but knew just like Doctor Strange that revealing how those paths worked too soon would prevent their success, regardless of who died in the process.
Interestingly, it’s debatable whether Doctor Fate actually stopped his vision. He seemed unable to see his own death, but when Hawkman used the helmet to trick Sabbac, the vision of Hawkman’s death is identical to Kent Nelson’s Black Adam Vision. This seems for a moment as if it were a statement that this future could not be changed, but it’s possible that since the vision came from Doctor Fate’s helmet, the helmet itself provided the exact vision as part of the ruse against Sabbac replicated.
Why Doctor Fate’s helmet disappeared after the fight (not during)
After Doctor Fate dies black adam, His helmet falls to the ground and is eventually picked up by Hawkman, who uses his powers to help the Justice Society and Black Adam himself defeat Sabbac. Only after the fight is over will Doctor Fate’s helmet fall out of Hawkman’s clutches and the particles will float into the sky. Inside earlier Black Adamwhen the Justice Society’s Cyclone (Quintessa Swindell) and Atom Smasher (Noah Centineo) discuss Fate’s helmet, it is mentioned that it chooses who gets to touch it and use their powers, so Doctor Fate’s helmet serves as a representation of how his own agency is about who can touch it when it leaves Hawkman and presumably is looking for a new host.
While Doctor Fate’s helmet disappears inside Black Adam While it makes sense, it might seem odd that Fate’s helmet didn’t disappear once he was killed, and that Hawkman could touch it. Doctor Fate’s helmet is able to possess the wearer because (at least in the comics) he is not only sentient but inhabited by the god Nabu. After being associated with Kent Nelson for so many years, the Helm and Nabu probably felt some kind of emotional feeling towards the mortal. After Kent’s death in the DCEUs Black Adam, the helmet stayed close, allowing Hawkman to use his power to get revenge on Sabbac for killing Kent. However, once this revenge was complete, the Helm continued to move.
Will Doctor Fate return in the DCEU?
When a great comic book character dies, it’s not uncommon for them not to stay. But after Doctor Fate’s Black Adam Death, is it possible for him to return to the DCEU? The short answer is yes, but there is more complexity involved. In the comics, Doctor Fate is defined by the helmet, not the person, and while Kent Nelson is the first Doctor Fate in each iteration of the DC timeline, he’s not the only one. Left with the helmet at the end Black Adamit seems likely that the helm could be passed on to a new host and a version of Doctor Fate could reappear in DCEU despite his death Black Adam.
However, perhaps the bigger question is about that Black Adam Death is whether or not Pierce Brosnan’s Kent Nelson can return to the DCEU. Technically, it wasn’t Doctor Fate who actually died, it was Kent himself, and while the Helm can take on a new host (in the latest comics, Kent’s mantle is taken by his apprentice and grand-nephew Khalid Nassour), Kent returns to the DCEU full shape seems unlikely. Pierce Brosnan has a door open to repeating his Black Adam However, role in the DCEU as in the animated series Young Justice, after Kent Nelson’s death he is able to retain his spirit in the helmet for a time. This may allow Kent and Pierce Brosnan to appear to future users of the helmet, albeit not in fully physical form, and may also provide additional reasons why Hawkman was able to use Doctor Fate’s helmet after Kent Nelson’s death Black Adam.
