Earlier this year, billionaire business mogul Kim Kardashian announced the launch of her own swim line, Skims Swim.
The range of different swimwear items falls under their globally successful clothing brand Skims, which focuses on “offering solutions for every body” with its variety of garments.
The Skims Swim collection was quickly praised by countless online shoppers, many of whom called the brand “super inclusive” thanks to their range of funky swimwear pieces such as long sleeves, shorts and one-piece suits with no cut-outs.
One fan tweeted to compliment Kim’s items as they fell: “I was just checking these out @skims Swim line and you gotta give it to Kim… super inclusive.” Another echoed, “Wow this new Skims swim line is really inclusive I’ll give that to her.”
Some people even compared Kim’s collection to her younger sister Kylie Jenner’s swimwear line, which notoriously received scathing reviews upon its release.
Fans were unfazed by what they said Kylie Swim’s lack of sizing and poor quality when the clothes were released last September, leading to the young mogul being called out for her “lack of integrity as a business owner.”
“For me, it boils down to a lack of integrity as a business owner and entrepreneur,” said a swimwear designer on TikTok who reviewed several Kylie’s products in detail.
“Kylie designed these for HER body. Not the average woman,” wrote another person on Reddit. “There’s no way I or anyone I know can fit in without something slipping out. I really don’t see why she would release these given how limited body space they have.”
Comparing items from Kylie’s collection head-to-head with the Skims equivalent, one TikTok user, @HopeScope, said she noticed the difference in sizing “right away,” with the Skims bikini bottoms offering much more coverage than Kylie Swim’s.
And so it seemed that Kim might have picked up on fans’ concerns about Kylie’s size and coverage, given that Skims Swim was released about six months later.
Now thanks to the latest episode of Hulu’s The Kardashianswe got a more detailed behind-the-scenes look at how exactly Kim came to designing some of her swimwear.
Kim ventures to Miami with her sister Khloé and a group of her friends and describes their excitement at the launch of her Skims Swim pop-up.
“I design all the campaigns, I design the materials, the fabrics, the styles, like I really do everything,” she reveals, describing herself as a “workaholic.”
Below, Kim explains exactly why she decided to include such a diverse, unconventional range of swimwear items and reveals that she wanted people to be able to “cover up” their insecurities.
“I wanted to make it like LEGOs,” she says, pointing to a few of her different clothes. “So it might be like, if you want to cover your arms, wear this. If you want to cover your legs, wear this.”
“Like everyone, pick your insecurities and figure out how to hide them,” she adds.
It’s possible that Kim took this approach due to her apparent desire to keep hiding her own insecurities, with the reality star being called out on multiple occasions for apparent editing of her social media posts.
Earlier this year, fans suspected Kim had digitally altered her right leg in an Instagram photo, and the star hastily deleted it from her page after receiving a barrage of accusations that she had photoshopped it.
In the now-removed photo, Kim – who wore black bikini bottoms and a long-sleeved top – appeared to have had her leg worked on, which appeared distorted and blurry.
More recently, in August, Kim was called out again for appearing to have edited her trapezius muscle around her neck and shoulders from a series of Instagram photos — this time by commercial photographer @caroline_in_thecity on TikTok, going so far as to Photoshop invert the Area to show what the original image would have looked like.
You can watch the latest episode of The Kardashians now on Hulu or internationally on Disney+. The next episode will be released on October 26th.
