Few people are more iconic than Vanessa Williams, whose impressive work spans a prolific music career spanning numerous hits like Save the Best for Last, a Broadway stage portfolio and legendary television and film roles like Wilhelmina Slater Ugly Bettyand now she’s coming to Canada to perform live.
Performing at The Rose Brampton on October 15 in Brampton, Ontario, Williams certainly knows how to put on a show.
“I make all my hits and talk about my life,” she said Yahoo Canada, adding that everyone who comes to her show will also hear some Broadway songs and R&B. “I’m lucky that I have hits that even the … young people who know my music don’t even associate me with those hits because they know me from TV.”
“There are moments when you’ll hopefully burst into tears, there are moments when you’ll want to shrug your shoulders and dance along and hopefully take it back… so you can remember… when you first heard the songs. ”
Upcoming project based on Miss America scandal
Most recently, Vanessa Williams made headlines when Deadline reported that her personal story surrounding the 1980s Miss America scandal would be further developed in a limited series. In 1983, Williams was the first black woman to be crowned Miss America, but was forced by the organization to relinquish her title when nude photos taken prior to her Miss America designation were released penthouse magazine without their consent.
When asked about this upcoming project, Williams confirmed that it is still in the very early stages.
“I was approached by Neil Meron and Sony… and now the next step is to find out who I can work with to record what I want to record,” Williams said. “We don’t even have a script…[but] We’re getting ready to dive into our zooms and start our meetings.”
In terms of capturing what she wants to capture, the star stressed that the importance of family will be a central aspect of the story.
“The importance of family … obviously shaped my life and was the anchor and a big part of the success that I’ve had,” Williams said. “The support I have received from my family and friends is of the utmost importance.”
“Whoever is portraying my parents, that will be of paramount importance because they have been very influential in my life … I don’t know exactly what the time frame is, how limited the years are that we will go with.”

The way Vanessa Williams overcame such a massive scandal is not only inspiring, but her work continues to influence people to this day.
Recently, there have been “Justice for Teri” campaigns on social media related to her character in George Tillman Jr soul foodopposite Vivica A. Fox and Nia Long, with the character who has been described as “haughty” and selfish, but as more and more people think about her character, she has recently been praised for trying to set boundaries in a family , which she somehow used.
“I think back to the time [Teri was portrayed] Because it wasn’t a villain, it was a tough ass, and now there was this campaign like Justice for Teri, everyone was beating her up and she’s helping everyone out,” Williams said. “So it’s kind of funny that they made you make these iconic characters and they live forever.”
“Depending on the lens you’re looking at and the times of change, different reactions emerge.”
Looking to another infamous role Williams took on, Wilhelmina Slater on the show ugly betty, The star recalls how groundbreaking this series really was, although there was a moment when she thought she might have to pass on the role.
“Ugly Betty It was one of those joys to work on and when we shot the pilot in 2006 it was so unique,” Williams said. “I had four kids in four different schools in New York so great to be able to work on that being my home base and then of course they moved there [Los Angeles] and everything uprooted, and I basically said, ‘I can’t do this’ … and they basically came back and said, ‘How can we make this work?'”
“When I saw Justin and his coming out and Rebecca Romijn’s character was a trans character back in 2006, it was a trans character and those concepts weren’t on TV.”
Speaking about the possibility of a reboot, Williams said that after the death of the show’s creator, Silvio Horta, it would be difficult, but “you never know.”
“Most of the writers have done amazing things and I don’t know how you would update it because Betty is a young person trying to make her way in the world but you never know,” Williams said.

With such an inspiring career, Vanessa Williams remains one of the greatest artists and performers of all time, now passing her knowledge on to the next generation.
“What I did isn’t going to work for anyone in the industry today, there was no internet back then, you couldn’t start your own label and distribute it yourself,” Williams said. “It’s a very different landscape now, record companies don’t make as much money off their artists as they used to, artists don’t make money off their album sales, it’s all about touring because nobody’s buying any albums anymore.”
“First, you must follow your abilities. what are you good at …You gain experience and get better and better at what you are good at and you never know what other doors that will open up… Don’t be afraid to take on challenges and be brave because life is about experiencing new things , learning new things and meeting new people and that makes life sweet but also takes you to the next level of your life.”
