Renee Paquette has been candid about her decision to sign with AEW.
The newest member of the AEW broadcast team released an episode of The Sessions on Thursday. The podcast was recorded on Dynamite in the days leading up to their debut. During the discussion, Paquette commented on what led to her returning to the wrestling business.
“Obviously we watch wrestling so much in this house, we talk about wrestling so much in this house and it’s always been a weird, displaced feeling every time I’ve gone to shows with Jon because I’m always used to going to the Being shows, but working and being useful and contributing,” Paquette said. “So, being there for the duration of Jon at AEW and not doing that and just being there, like being Jon’s wife , just hanging out, I walk through the catering and grab a bite, it’s just a different feeling going there as a guest than being now, oh my god yeah cool I’m going here now.
Paquette also spoke about her departure from WWE, noting that she is grateful for her time with the company.
“I just felt like I had done everything I could do there. Looking back on my time in WWE I just want to reiterate that because I feel like it can get really muddy in those conversations because people get very territorial WWE vs AEW and all that. I want to be with have nothing to do with any of this. I love so many people in both companies. WWE was obviously so great to me for years yes I can get angry at things but who could. They gave me such a great platform and I really had a great time there and obviously I wasn’t going to be offered that opportunity at AEW now , if I hadn’t had the reputation and career I could have in WWE.”
Paquette was asked how her deal with AEW came about.
“It’s kind of funny because even though I’ve been around a lot, I really never really spoke to Tony [Khan] about coming to AEW. A lot of it was — this is probably going to sound bad, and I’m sure people will take that out of context — but honestly, a lot of it was talking to Jon about, like, ‘Man, I want to be back in the wrestling world ‘I miss being there, I miss doing things.'”
“Most of our conversations have been internal between Jon and I, figuring out like, ‘Yeah, I want to do something, I want to come back, I don’t know what this conversation is, how are we going to go about that? ‘”
“He and Tony are obviously very close. You spend a lot of time talking about things. I think it was more that they talked about it because I think a lot of people just thought I was done wrestling to a certain extent and maybe they didn’t want to ask me to do any of that they thought I didn’t want to do it, or they didn’t want to step on Jon’s toes, and those are all very real things that could have been.”
Paquette went on to say that the deal to bring her to AEW came about quickly.
“It all happened very quickly, it literally happened so quickly that suddenly Jon and I had been talking about it and it felt like my manager was going to call me the next day and be like, ‘Oh yeah, they’re reaching out, the contract is coming through’ I said, ‘Wow, that was a quick turnaround.'”
“Throughout all of that, I haven’t even spoken that much to Tony about it just because there wasn’t really much we needed to talk about until I got there.”
“He knows my skills, he knows what I bring to the table, so I think it’s more like we’re bringing you in here, let’s just start working, and I think we’ll figure it out as we go . He knows what I bring to the table in terms of my years of work in this world and all of that, to the things that I’ve been able to do outside of wrestling.
Paquette said she has no plans to work with AEW on commentary, but would if the opportunity arose. She’s hinted that another announcement is coming, but she can’t talk about it just yet.
“I have one more announcement to make but I can’t announce it just yet, so everyone keep your assholes puckering and we’ll be dropping it soon.”
