Maggie Mac Neil did what she does best – won gold – in the women’s 100m butterfly to mark Canada’s seven-medal second day of competition at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in England on Saturday.

A native of London, Ontario, she swam the course in a record time of 56.36 seconds at the Commonwealth Games and claimed the Commonwealth title, along with the Olympic title she had won just 12 months earlier.

Mac Neil, 22, finished just two hundredths of a second ahead of Australia’s Emma McKeon, who clinched the silver medal. Another Australian, Brianna Throssell, won the bronze medal.

Saturday’s medals brought Canada’s total to 11. The Canadian team won 82 at the Australia Games four years ago.

Still, Canada’s Katerine Savard and Rebecca Smith kept pace with their rivals to set the stage for Maggie MacNeil’s dominant anchor leg to nearly take Canada to Silver with a time of 3:37.25.
