Apple devices and services continue to be the most popular choices among teenagers in the United States, according to new data released today by investment firm Piper Sandler in its semi-annual Teen Survey.
According to the results, 87 percent of teens surveyed own an iPhone, and 88 percent of teens expect an “iPhone” to be their next phone. Over the past 10 years, “iPhone” ownership among teenagers has more than doubled. For example, in 2012, 40 percent of US teenagers owned an iPhone.
Piper Sandler points out that the high “iPhone” usage among teenagers bodes well for Apple’s service products, as well as continuous product cycle updates.
We believe the increased penetration and intent are important given the mature market for premium smartphones. Additionally, these trends are encouraging as the company continues to introduce new iPhones that could allow for a significant refresh of the product cycle. We believe these positive trends can also be a catalyst for continued service growth as the Apple hardware install base continues to grow.
The Apple Watch is less popular, with only 31 percent of teens owning Apple’s wrist-worn device, but the Apple Watch is by far the most popular smartwatch among teens. 36.8 percent of teens reported owning a smartwatch, so only 5.8 percent own a non-Apple Watch smartwatch.
Piper Sandler has been running these teen polls for more than a decade. For the latest publication, 14,500 teenagers with an average age of 15.8 years were surveyed in 47 states.
